Can you have a coil fitted if you are breastfeeding?

If its a mirena, do the hormones affect anything (is milk supply affected)

Is it worse having one fitted if you aren't having periods anyway (think I read about having fitted just after whilst the cervix is softer)

I think it's only painful to have it fitted if you haven't previosly had children as the cervix is unyeilding.

The amount of progestin released from the Mirena to your bloodstream is, afaik, less than what you would absorb from the mini-pill, so it's safe to use whilst breastfeeding, provided you are happy with it. It's widely accepted to use the mini-pill and I didn't find it affected my milk supply, so Mirena shouldn't.

As the copper coil doesn't have any hormones then there is no question that it's safe whilst breastfeeding.

i tried to have a coil fitted after ds1 whilst breastfeeding(just the copper coil though not mirena)however my cervix was contracting too much and 'fighting' against it.this was extremely painful and i bled a lot after each attempt-i had three attempts during the 8 months i breastfed.doctor gave me two options-have a general anaesthetic to have it fitted or come back after i'd stopped breastfeeding and during my first period for it to be fitted then, when my cervix would be more open and softer.(sorry for the graphic description)i chose the latter and it was fitted but doctor still found it very difficult and it was still very painful, you get labour type pains for hours after its fitted.
don't want to put you off but just to warn you it isn't always as straight forward as you think.but yes to answer your question,it is poss whilst breastfeeding

I had a mirena fitted whilst BFing DD3. The coil didn't affect my ability to breast feed, however it did completely ruin the next 5 years of my life due to the most horrendous side effects. I've never had problems taking oral progesterone, but the mirena made me think I was seriously ill, and the doctors too for that matter as they refused to link my symptoms with the coil.

Thanks for the replies, and for your honesty. I know there are mixed views on it and you dont' know until you try it I suppose
