I've been up since 2am again because everytime I lie down I cough, DS was the same earlier, but has finally gone back to sleep, so I thought I'd ask -
Has anyone else found this virus just going on and on and on, and what on earth can I do? Just when it looks like we've almost seen the back of it, sore throats again and more coughing. both been to the doc.s at various points, who says it's not bacterial, so no anti-b's - (did you know coughing up green gunk doesn't mean it's bacterial, I didn't!!)... we both feel fine, apart from the cough, and sore throat when it happens.Coughing 24/7, obviously notice it more at night.
DS still throwing up food sometimes because if the coughing and we've not had a decent night in a month.
I'm wondering if coughing up stuff is reinfecting our throats - not scientific, but that's how it seems...
Whaddya think....

Hi Jackaroo. We all had "the cough" too last year. My dd is very fair skinned and she used to go so red in the face with coughing her friends nicknamed her the strawberry! It's horrible isn't it? Our doctor very helpfully said "In Chinese it's called the 100 day cough. There's nothing that you can do about it - it'll go away in time" And it did - eventually. We used a lot of olbas oil, which seemes to help a bit. The other thing that seemed to help was sipping iced water. I bought enormous bags of ice so that we always had some available. Have you tried raising the head of your beds? That helped us a bit. It does go - but it does take ages. I remember beig so tired and yawning and the yawn setting off another coughing fit. I really feel for you.

For you - have you tried pholcodine linctus. It's not like usual cough medicines, it works on the area of the brain which controls the cough reflex (I think that's what my mum said!). All I know is it's the only cough medicine which actually makes any difference to me.

For DS - we've been told by our GP we are probably going to have to wait for the weather to improve for him to shake it completely (he's had it since Nov). I laughed at this but apparently it's true. Also his cot is raised at the head end - this seems to help a little.

Hope you're all feeling better soon

Thanks Kate and WEegle - I thought I'd already replied, but doesn't seem to have worked.

the pholcodeine helped me get more sleep last night, and I'm finding steam and hot drinks the most effective thing this weekend (this weekend we're mostly......drinking lemon and honey)...

It's reassuring just to know others have had it and we're not slowly being killed by my lack of dusting....
