Green Poo, Diarrhea and A Really Bad Sore Bottom - any suggestions?

Hi
Ds is 9 months old and has not suffered from nappy rash or anything really since he was born. When I got him up yesterday he had already done a poo which is unusual, he's usually a once or twice a day man after lunch and dinner. He then continued to poo every 2 hours or so until a rather shocking green one in the afternoon. His little bottom started to get a little sore so was using metanium but after him waking screaming every 3 hours last night is it now so red and angry I am not sure what's best to do. I am assuming a tummy bug that is causing diarrhea (that seems to be like acid!), still using Metanium and talc to add a bit more of a barrier, hoping as he stops pooing so much things will get better. It's breaking my heart though as he is in so much pain everytime he poo's and gets really distressed when I change and clean him up. Any suggestions of what to do? He may be teething (he doesn't have any yet) but can't see anything, he does also have a bit of a snotty nose but no red cheeks?! Is there anything oral I can give him to help maybe thicken things up, or stop is poo being like acid? Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

My DS's were like that when teething. Lots of fresh air to the botton area if poss, and lots of sudocrem. It is so horrible bless him.

DeviousDaffodil · 01/03/2007 21:55

bland stodgy food.

maisym · 01/03/2007 21:57

wash in the bath straight away - could be many quick baths but the water will be calmer than baby wipes (if you're using these?)

blodwen · 01/03/2007 21:58

Try a thin layer of metanium, then a layer of vaseline as a barrier.

shag · 01/03/2007 22:00

my mate with twins would gave the bottom bath with lots of salt in the water. then the slather of vaseline.

LittleMan · 01/03/2007 22:01

Hi All, thanks for your suggestions. Have stopped using wipes and back to cotton wool and warm water. He doesn't even like sitting down as his bottom is so sore, and he screamed all the way through his bath. He's also very tired - is this usual when teething?

tired, grizzly, clingy....

maisym · 01/03/2007 22:06

could it be thrush? this can cause bad nappy rash?

LittleMan · 01/03/2007 22:06

Yes, all of those but thought just cos his little bum hurt! He's not a cuddly baby - on the go too much normally, but has been quite huggy today!

How would I know if it is thrush?

maisym · 01/03/2007 22:13

not sure of all the signs - but having white spots in the mouth is one.

maisym · 01/03/2007 22:15

found this on thrush

LittleMan · 01/03/2007 22:28

Thanks Maisym will have a good look in his mouth tomorrow!

Green Poo usually means your Ds has had poorly tummy. My DD suffered with this too around this age. I used a cream called Cammillosan (sp) cant remember how to spell it, but it worked wonders, it contains beeswax & was in a green/yellow box, around £4.99 per tube, avail at any chemist I think.
Vaseline good too, to take the stink out.
Teething is usually the course of this IMO

Good Luck Littleman xxx

MusicLover · 02/03/2007 14:28

here it is
Knew I spelt it wrong, but it is really good, trust me!

Bump... For LittleMan to look at the link I did .

deffo tummy bug , as dd2 6mths contracted the gastric flu we've all had the last 6 days , she started with vomiting Saturday through the night and has now had diarrhea for the last 2-3 days , VERY VERY red sore bum and nappies galore , was every half hour yesterday .

Ive been changing her very frequently and LOADS of sudocrem , couldn't let her have no nappy as its been so often. Its seems to be getting better now , like your ds, she couldnt even sit or lay on her botty.

Took her to gp , to have ehr checked over and she seems to be ok , thankfully it will run it course by next week!

Fluids are the best thing , but may be just the BRAT (banana, rice , apple & toast) diet if he wants to eat.

melsy · 02/03/2007 16:03

ahhh yerrrr kamillasan , its what you use for breast feeding , I have loads of tubes didnt think of that. I suppose the skin is the same there as the lips and nipples.

vanessasalome · 02/03/2007 16:03

My 3 month old had a very sore bottom and the doc gave him Canestan which cleared it up in a day! Not sure if you can buy it except on prescription, but as she said, its not just for thrush. I really works.

MusicLover · 02/03/2007 16:10

You can buy Canestan over the counter, but they do a different one for bum area, its a blue box rather than the normal red one. Canasten also do a cream for athletes foot now, but the normal red one works too.

LittleMan · 04/03/2007 20:55

Hi All
Thanks very much for your replies. Music - sorry I didn't have a chance to pick up emails before now. Yes I have heard of Kamillosan, I used it for sore nipples when first started breast feeding, and used to use it on ds' botty but found Metanium better when nappy rash bad. Ds seems to be getting better now, poo almost solid this evening. He is fine in himself and most of his bottom is better, but some very sore patches that kind of blistered, but as he is pooing less and they are more solid hopefully they will start to clear up soon. Still not sure if it was tummy upset or teething, guess i'll never know.
Thanks again for all your help and advice!
