Ds's allergic rash doesn't seem to be getting better, just moving around.

Took 4 yr old Ds to the docs on Tuesday as he was covered in red blotchy rash. When the gp saw it, some of the red blotches had started to go white in the middle. I took his top off and the gp immeidiatly said 'thats an allergic rash'. He said it was Urticaria and that it could last a week.

I have no idea what caused the rash but it doesn't seem to be getting any better, just moving around his body. It was mainly on the back of his shoulders and his belly, but today it is mainly on his lower arms and legs and at certain times of day it comes up on his face really badley too.
On saturday it will be a week since I first noticed it, surely it should be looking better by now ?

Okay, so apart from the hives, no other signs or symptoms?

has the doc suggested regular doses of anti histamine, e.g piriton?

If he is taking piriton does the rash come and go according to last time of dose?

If rash gets worse or child starts to feel ill, go to the hospital, just in case.

No other symptoms apart from the rash no.

He is having 2.5ml of Piriton 4 times a day.

He was covered again this morning especially his face, and then he had his piriton and by the time he went to nursery his face was alot better but his arms were still covered.

Nursery gave him some more at around 11:30 but said that at lunchtime the rash was really bad again. However at home time (3:15), his face was almost clear again.

He had some more piriton at about 3:45 and tbh I didn't notice any change at all, and then he has had some more about 7:15 but his face is covered again, aswell as his arms and legs.

Anyone else ?? Non of my kids have ever had an allergic reaction to anything so I have no clue about this.

Have a look on here and here . It explains that in children hives are often due to viral infection. You would see the hives appearing and disappearing, in different places on his body, much like the way you describe in you OP. In some cases the hives can stay for weeks. I feel sorry for your little ds: I have occasional attacks of hives (mine are caused by autoimmune disorder), and have them for weeks at a time. Very itchy and painful. One thing my specialist in the allergy clinic said was that if it is an allergen causing the hives, they would come up within 30 minutes of exposure to it. With the pattern of appearing and disappearing in your ds that sounds therefor a bit unlikely to me. Though it could I guess be some kind of pollen (there are some spring flowers out). My guess would be that it is related to viral infection. This doesn't necessarily give him any other symptoms (has he had a cold/fever recently?), and there are lots of bugs doing the rounds atm.

Thanks honneybunny, those links are great. He had a very slight cold just before he had the rash so i guess it could be a reaction to a virus. One of those links said the rash can last for weeks, so at least I know it is normal for him to still have it now.

He just asked me if he will be not spotty in the morning, poor thing.

Oh well, at least I know what it is now.
