Abnormal smear

Help! Stop me worrying!

Smear tests came through the post today and I have low grade abnormal cells and need to go for a Colposcopy.

Also shower HPV which is confusing me. Been with DH for 9 years and last smear 5 years ago was all clear. I know DH is faithful etc so just confused.

Can anyone offer any reassurance??

I had a severely abnormal smear a few years ago and as my mom had cervical cancer I was shitting myself. I had a colposcopy and they removed quite a large amount of my cervix, all my follow up smears have been normal and I carried 2 babies to term.

Sorry have no experience of the HPV part but best of luck.

Please don't panic I had the same last year and again this year. I'm having my second colposcopy this week.
They are a bit uncomfortable (I had cells removed and a biopsy last year) but all results came back as clear. The test itself completely wiped me out for the rest of the day though.
I'm now checked yearly and will be for the next few years, hens why I had another test so soon. I have purposely not Google anything as I don't want to scare myself.

I had borderline hpv results and they said it will clear on its own .

I have had abnormal cells (severe) and various treatments to remove including colposcopy, the first time I got the results I was a total mess, I thought for sure it was something really sinister. It wasn't but I have had to have treatment every smear I've had, and more regular smears.

As for hpv, I didn't have that the first few times then randomly did have it, the nurse explained to me although you 'catch' it from sex, it is not an sti, so no need to worry about your husbands faithfulness! Also it can just go away on its own as mine did, no hpv on my last smear.

I don't think you have anything to worry about at all, I had severe abnormalities on my first smear so was convinced I had something. Speak to the nurses at the hospital and they should reassure you as they did me.

I just feel grateful now that I was able to have access to a smear as the scary thing is what could have happen had I not had it!

Hpv testing has only been added to the screening program relatively recently so it may be that your previous smear was not tested for hpv 5 years ago

Yes please for the love of god do not google it! I did when it happened to me and I ended up off work with stress.

You will find lots of people with horror stories and that is simply not representative of the thousands of people that have abnormal smears and are totally fine!

You wouldn't believe how many people I speak to nowadays that have had them at some point in their life, it's quite common, and the scary things are much less common!

Thank you all so much!!!! Iv been a right mess all day!!! Panicking that it'll be something awful! And all you read about for HPV is that it's an STI which is just embarrassing! Lol!! I will just go for the Colposcopy. Thank u for all your responses; I may sleep tonight!!

Please don't worry. Every smear I've ever had (I'm 44) has come back as 'abnormal'. Each time I have gone for a colposcopy and everything has been fine. It's SO important that they are nitpicky and overly cautious just in case there is anything wrong. In that case, they catch it nice & early and all is well.

Think I read somewhere that HPV can lay dormant for years, so wouldn't over think that part. My niece had a similar result to you, she had a colonoscopy and then had smear tests every year for a while, she is now back to every three years. You are being checked out which is good, know it's near racking but try and look
On it as preventative rather than being anything sinister. Thinking of you op.
