Fingernail injury. <Boak inducing>

I thumped my index finger closing the window yesterday morning. In the process I split my fingernail, about 2 thirds of the way down and half of the way across. The nail is lifted from the nail bed but still attached. It didn't really bleed. I've put a plaster on it to stop it catching. It's not sore but the thought of whats under the plaster is making my skin crawl. Can I just keep putting a clean plaster on it for the next 6 months until it grows out? TIA

OMG I did the EXACT thing yesterday opening a gate. Thankfully at the time by hands were numb with the cold so it didn't really hurt at the time but it keeps snagging on things now and it's so sore. Earlier I toyed with the idea of cutting the nail down as far as I can but I'm too much of a wimp. I don't want to make it worse so I'm going for the plaster for now. I need to take 4yo dd for a swimming lesson tomorrow though which is going to be a right PITA.

I'm hoping that the nail will fuse itself back on...

I literally feel your pain. I can't cut it off because it's half attached, half detached. I've put on one of those wee finger condom things to keep the plaster dry.

I caught mine in a car door awhile back and broke the base of the nail. I hadn't reckoned on it filling with blood overnight and swelling to a stupid size. I ended up burning a hole through the centre of the nail with a sterilised paperclip.

The nail came off a couple of days later. It didn't take that long to grow back iirc.

Hope yours doesn't swell up, but keep an eye on it.

Ouch! You poor thing. I split my nail about 6 monthe ago, though not as dramatically. I kept catching it and splitting it more,until I finally realised that I needed to clip it as low as I could. Someone more enlightened might come along and tell you better advice, but good luck with it.

I think it should heal well. It will just seem like ages for the new nail to grow to a good length. Keep an eye on it for infection.
