How long to recover after laparoscopy? It's dragging on now...

I had a lap&dye nearly 2 weeks ago now. I chose this over a hyster...thingybob which is the one where you're awake to put the dye in because I'm a wuss.
I was starting to feel better after about 4/5 days then I started getting dreadful pain around one of the entry wounds (the one in my navel). After a day or so I realised something was wrong as I'd never had pain like it and I couldn't bend, or walk for any length of time. I went back to the doc's and he said it'd become infected so prescribed antibiotics - this was last Friday, 9 days after the op.
The swelling and initial pain subsided over the next day and I had some horrible pus come out (sorry!) but I'm still in pain from around the site. The site itself feels raw and sore but I've also got an area about the size of a fist just under my belly button and to one side which feels like I have to hold it when I walk or it absolutely kills. I've had to put dd into nursery today as I couldn't look after her. The only way I get comfy is to sit or lie in a particular position, and I sleep with a pillow next to my belly to support it.
I've made an appt to see the doc again this afternoon but I want to find out, before I get the brush off - or otherwise - what's normal after surgery like this?
I thought it would be a straightforward op with maybe a week or so off work. Today I'll be asking for a sicknote for yet another week (that'll make it 3!!!) Is this 'normal'?

Hi,

I would contact the hospital who carried out this operation as a matter of urgency. This sounds like an infection.

You should be followed up as a matter of course a few days after such an operation. I would have strong words with them!!.

Moomin, sounds like an infection which the antibiotics haven't got on top of. You need to be seen today.
I had a lap and dye a few years ago and was back to normal within a few days (one day off work).
hope you get sorted soon.

808state, here (UK) it would be routine to be followed up at the GP surgery to have the stitches out and for any other problems arising - you wouldn't routinely be seen at the hospital for the aftercare.

I had a lap done in 96 and was up and about after 2 or 3 days. The stitches were supposed to dissolve them selves, but they didn't so the gp took them out after a couple of weeks. I would definitely go back to the gp, and get yourself checked.
