Well, nobody can diagnose you over the internet, but it sounds like it might be - or a v nasty cold.

Go to bed, rest, plenty of fluids and paracetamol. Hope you feel better soon.

SauvignonGrower · 07/12/2016 08:25

Doesn't sound like it. Flu always involves a fever. Many people I know have had a very nasty cold that knocks them out for days.

Meandyouandyouandme · 07/12/2016 08:58

I think if you have flu you can't get out of bed for a few days. Hopefully you've just a bad cold and you'll feel better soon Flowers

BakeOffBiscuits · 07/12/2016 09:04

I don't think you'd have the energy to post in the internet if it was Flu. I've only had it twice and I could barely lift my head off the pillow for about 4 days.

I do hope you're feeling better soon.

Middleoftheroad · 07/12/2016 09:05

When I had flu (the only time, thank God) I couldn't even text. It was Xmas and couldn't look at phone messages or even watch kids open pressies. I would not have been able to post on here in the midst of it all.

I had fever, raging thirst. Slept loads. Only moved from bed to use loo. Not too many cold like symptoms tbh. Worst I ever felt and it lasted a week. There was no nose running or coughing though. Sounds like a bad cold?

FruitCider · 07/12/2016 09:07

Imagine there is a £50 note on the floor just outside of your bedroom. Could you go and get it? If not, then it's flu.

Grumpyoldblonde · 07/12/2016 09:09

Sounds like a very bad cold, or possibly an influenza virus (I understand you can have an influenza virus which isn't what we would call actual flu)
Whatever it is, you sound very unwell, so do rest.
I have had flu and pneumonia and could text, make tea etc. but it knocked me for 6 and I felt tired for weeks after. I did have a raging temp with my flu.

lougle · 07/12/2016 09:13

Influenza is flu. Flu is short for influenza. But there are different strains of flu (e.g. flu A, flu B and H1N1 [swine flu]) that may differ slightly in symptom/presentation.

The only way to tell is by swabbing

Grumpyoldblonde · 07/12/2016 09:17

Influenza is flu. Flu is short for influenza - yes I know, what I meant was there are strains we wouldn't necessarily call 'the flu' - people say it's not flu if you can do anything, but it not always the case as strain C is much milder. You can have cold symptoms such as sneezing and a runny nose with flu. Anyway Op sounds rough - rest and drink!

Artandco · 07/12/2016 09:22

Sounds like a cold. Flu you can't get out of bed still a week later, can't read, txt, have lights on, sleep 23hrs a day

WalterWhitesNipple · 07/12/2016 09:51

If it was flu you probably wouldn't have the energy to ask mumsnet!

Molly333 · 07/12/2016 10:15

Interesting on the basis of what you've said u think it's been flu as I would hv left the fifty quid as no energy and hv been unable to tell to anyone for days due to lack of energy also spiking temperature all over the place

Flu comes on very suddenly , always involves fever & you can't function through it.

I had proper flu years ago. All I could do was cry with pain... Had it over Christmas Day and could only look at my presents.

It left me with M.E which I'm still suffering with years later.

BakeOffBiscuits · 07/12/2016 18:43

You do sound very poorly. How are you tonight?

lucy101101 · 07/12/2016 18:58

I have just had what I am pretty certain was flu: raging temperatures and sweating, aches all over my body, a dry mouth however much water I drank, covers touching my body hurt, endless coughing but no real cold symptoms, I could barely eat and couldn't do anything apart from lie in bed. It went on for a full week and I am still feeling weak (and very thin) 10 days later. I also had the flu jab back in October!

Paulat2112 · 07/12/2016 19:07

I would say no. I recently had a very bad cold which was similar to what you are describing. I'm still not back to myself and it's been nearly three weeks.

If you had flu you wouldn't be posting on mumsnet.

Last time I had flu (only had it twice) I ended up in hospital as the doctor thought I had meningitis.

Sallystyle · 08/12/2016 12:30

I wish people would stop saying that shit about not being able to text or go on MN if you had proper flu.

I look after people with confirmed flu all the time.. some actually do manage to play on their phones for a while. Others can't, they still have the flu.

I hope you feel better soon OP Thanks

TheWayYouLookTonight · 08/12/2016 12:43

Sounds pretty flu-ey to me, especially with a spiking fever as you describe. I've had proper flu before and I found meds would bring the fever down, but not for long enough between doses, so it would spike back up. Keep drinking plenty of water.

I think the '£50 note test' is good but think about the note being outside your front door. If you feel too ill to get that then could well be flu! Many normally healthy people who get flu can at least get up and pee, but not go much further.

Get well soon Flowers

lougle · 08/12/2016 18:42

Yes, I have to say that as an ITU nurse, we get our fair share of severely ill patients with confirmed flu. They can, and do, use their phones. They can, and do, listen to the radio, etc. Yet they are in ITU because they have a life-threatening illness as a result of flu, so 'proper' flu.

Molly333 · 08/12/2016 21:59

Thanks for all your comments , I giess I was just asking people's thoughts/ experiences to see if mine was similar to that of someone with flu , not a diagnosis which of course I know I can't get over the Internet ( im not stupid) . Thanks people I appreciated you all taking the time to reply , on the mend now I think :)
