Sudden severe nappy rash in 18 month old - just today!

I sent my DD to nursery this morning and she was fine. They called me two hours later and asked me to pick her up as she'd had a runny nappy and was very sore. She's teething at the moment (18 months and just four teeth) and has had a few odd nappies this week.
But her bottom is suddenly really raw. She's not had nappy rash for a year or so, so I'm surprised it's come up so quickly so violently. She's crying every time she does a little wee, and i'm changing it often and putting on barrier cream etc, but any further advice greatly appreciated... I mean how does it get so nasty so quickly? My DH thinks the nursery might have left her to sit in her poo today, but I don't think they would...

That's just the thing, you don't know for sure what they do. Don't mean to worry you or anything. What I use, which works really quickly is Metanium (makes horrible marks all over though) and then a thick lot of vaseline. That usually clears DS's up by the next day. And yes, it does come very quickly, so don't panic too much. Also try to 'air' her bum and let her toddle around without her nappy for a bit.

It could well have just started suddenly. i was minding a wee girl last year, she had a nappy change (wet only) and her bottom was fine. We went out for a walk, with her in the buggy and she started screaming, wouldn't sit down, and when i got her back to the house her bottom was red raw. I did what hulan did, and it soon cleared.

Thanks for that. Is Metanium something you get from the chemist? Will get some this afternoon.

Yes it is and it's really good. You won't look back

I use metanium too and bepanthen if it's not too bad. Had one lot of really bad nappy rash once. Like you, it seemed to appear between nappy changes and was red raw. If she's teething now, she cries when I need to change her as she's sore

Yeah, sitting in poo could cause the problem (or if she maybe had diarrhea - or even slightly runny poos). Urine and poo = bad combination. Creams are good as others said, and try to change nappy even more frequently than normal. Hope it clears up fast
!
