What treatment did you use?
How long was the recovery/after how long you felt normal again?

Yep. It was dreadful. I was prescribed about 3/4 medications to take for 5 days. NO alcohol. The medication made me feel crap (thrush in my mouth and nausea) but I was better in a week. No problems since and it was nearly 20 years ago.
DH had the same about 5 years ago. He didn't get thrush.

fruitbats · 01/12/2016 19:49

Have you been diagnosed OP?

Lightsoffplease · 01/12/2016 19:51

Two family members have had it this year. Other family member have had it too in the past. After treatment it can bring on depression and bouts of uncomfortable digestive problems.

Thank you for your replies Ladies!

I have been diagnosed 5 years ago and took medication at that time, and all symptoms were gone; didn't think much about it then. Then, again this year i was diagnosed in February, i took "Triple Therapy" and it failed to eradicate the bacteria. Then, after a month or so, i took Quadruple Therapy and even though it did eradicate the bacteria the recovery has been very very slow and painful. Its been 5 months since i finished antibiotics and not feeling yet as my old self. I thought it would be nice to hear from others if anyone else has experienced anything similar and how they have coped/ what has helped in the recovery!

That sounds rubbish user. I must have been very lucky, although I suffered before diagnosis. I felt great after the treatment finished and touch wood have had no problems since. Good luck getting better Thanks

Thank you Fruitbats, i am glad you are completely cured, and all the best to you!

I'm wondering about this - I've felt rubbish since the start of autumn, with stomach pains on and off and wind, which I've never really had. Doc has said probably an ulcer and a week ago gave me omeprazole. Since then I've had a 5 day throbbing headache and last couple of days am just burping constantly. Now I have sore throat/ early cold symptoms but know no one with a cold. He didn't mention h pylori but everything I read, it comes up.

I remember DH's nan burping constantly one Christmas some years ago now; she died of stomach cancer in the spring. I'm probably catastrophising but I feel quite scared.

Doc was in a right bad mood the day I saw him - you could tell by his tone calling other patients well before I went in. He said give it 4 weeks on the meds then go back to my regular doctor, not him (takes weeks and weeks to see a specific doctor) in 6 weeks time. I feel so crap I don't know if to go sooner.

Hi musicposy,

many of the symptoms you describe i had, so it would be wise to be tested for h-pylori. Since you haven't been treated before a simple blood test would show whether you are infected or no. If you are not happy with the GP you should consider changing, or just go to walk in clinic and ask specifically to be tested for h-pylori.

I hope all goes well for you!

I had it about 6 months ago, I took two sets of tablets, one called ciprofloxacin and metronidazole. Think very carefully before taking cipro it is a controversial drug with many claiming they have been floxed. In America ciproflxacin is classed as a black label drug meaning it's one step away from being banned. I took both the above tablets and I felt like shit, if I didn't also have Crohn's I may have refused the treatment and sought out other cures. I feel no different after treatment than before, for me it was a waste of time but I obviously have other health issues.

BusterGonad · 02/12/2016 06:41

Also just to add the drugs I took made me heady, and sinusy and generally I felt like my head did not belong to my body. I had a very dry mouth and a furry tongue....but at least I had my health....lol.

user1480470736 · 02/12/2016 12:23

Thank you for your reply BusterGonad!

I took with the first round of antibiotics, Amoxicilline and Clarithromicine, and it was brutal, i thought i would never finish the course alive! Then with next round i took Tetracycline and Metrodizanole, this one was brutal too, but not as bad as first one.
Anyway, i hope you have eradicated that evil bacteria and start feeling well soon!

I had flare ups on and off for about 10 years.
I can't remember which ones but I know I took lots of different antibiotics!
The doctors told me symptoms would ease if I stopped eating spicy food, stopped drinking alcohol and stopped drinking coffee. I couldn't do any of them!
Any flare ups/symptoms stopped when I stopped drinking 11 years ago!

I know a few people who say they have been cured by taking Mastic gum

BusterGonad · 02/12/2016 15:09

Yep, I would've done the mastic gym if I was otherwise well. I thought I was mentally ill on my drug combo, to put it bluntly it was a head f**k!!!

BusterGonad · 02/12/2016 15:09

Gum not gym!!!

feelingbetternowtho · 02/12/2016 19:44

I was diagnosed with h pylori and took the triple treatment in September. Was expecting it to be horrific after some things I've read but I was totally ok taking the medication for one week. A few weeks after finishing the medication I had a spicy meal and I had the most awful stomach pains ALL night! I need to go for endoscopy to see if I have an ulcer caused by h pylori. I eat small meals and try to eat a good clean diet so avoid too much spicy, fatty, processed food, coffee and alcohol. I take good probiotics every day along with vitamins and try to relax a bit more. No idea how I got h pylori or how long I had it for but I felt terrible for past year, put weight on, stomach was HUGE and I am naturally quite petite normally. I've read that h pylori effects levels of cortisol and so you can gain weight. Also read somewhere about it having an effect on and lowering serotonin production which is mostly made in the digestive tract and so can cause depression. Had terrible bloating, wind, stomach pains, acid reflux which caused awful heartburn. Felt exhausted, depressed, constantly ill like I've never felt before!

user1480470736 · 03/12/2016 01:13

"Feelingbetternowthough" its great that you feel better! I also suffered horrible horrible acid reflux, i had all kind of symptoms. Actually i lost weight, about 30 lb in a couple of months! Now after eradication the reflux has slowly calmed down, i am managing without medication; but the bloating, slow disgestion and somehow general malaise is still carrying on. I guess in my case has caused lots of damage and its going to be a long way until i feel completely my old self, sigh.

Just been diagnose with Helicocacter pylori. Had the camera down my stomach and in confirmed I had the bacteria. On 1 week course of triple medications antibiotics amoxicillin, metronidazole and lansoprazole. I am not feeling great on them but if it does trick then I do not mind suffering a bit. The course is only for a week and looking at this site most people are on medication from 2 to 3 weeks. Will check out the doctor about that. My symptoms were a bit different than some people. I would wake up feeling as tho my intestines where having a fight with my stomach. The feeling of sickness and being sick. Burping constantly, loose bowels and dry mouth. I did not get any heart burn just bringing up wind all the time. The worst thing is I keep on bringing up this white thick flemmy stuff in my throat. I dont know if this is coming from my sinuses or my throat. I feel like I am going to choke.

BusterGonad · 18/04/2018 22:21

Good luck Volcano, I don't know what symptoms I had with it as I have Crohns as well. My course of treatment was 5 days.

Skiiltan · 19/04/2018 07:16

No idea how I got h pylori

Half the world's population is infected with Helicobacter pylori (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28456631). The question is more why/how it causes significant gastritis/ulcers in some people but not others.

BusterGonad · 19/04/2018 07:53

Yes Ski is right, and I think it can be symptomless but if you have too much (more than normal) that's when they treat it. I could be talking shit though! 😂

Volcano1954 · 19/04/2018 15:52

Thank you bustergonad for your reply. Back at the doctor's tomorrow so will request a re-test just to make sure it has gone.

BusterGonad · 19/04/2018 17:39

I was retested Volcano and I was given the all clear. Good luck for your retest tomorrow.
