I have a killer sore throat, more on one side than the other, what will work and what won't? Have had paracetamol, currently have my scarf on and am a bit loathe to gargle with salt water.

Gargle (and then swallow) soluble aspirin, and buy that ultra septic (or maybe it is called chloroseptic) numbing throat spray.

MerlinsBeard · 14/02/2007 16:52

i can't take aspirin normally coz i am asthmatic - does that make a difference with gargling it?

Will go rummage for spray i am sure wehave somne in that i had forgotten.

Thank you

Put a couple of tablespooons of honey into a mug, add boiling water and a slice of lemon.

I find this really helps me as the honey soothes it.

ComeOVeneer · 14/02/2007 16:55

You swallow the aspirin after gargling, but even if you didn't I wouldn't like to say it is OK.

MerlinsBeard · 14/02/2007 16:56

will try the spray and the honey drink first just in case..thank you both

I was once told gargling with salt but never tried it. Why is it supposed to help?Gargling is good though gets straight to the point.

If it is more on one side than the other it could be tonsilitis. Have a look at your throat in the mirror and if there are white spots on your tonsils then you prob have tonsilitis and need to go to dr for antibiotics. Believe me nothing else will work, I get bouts very frequently and not a lot works. Have you tried Lemsip? It's better than standard paracetamol as it actually touches your throat and gives quicker pain relief. Hope this helps, I am feeling your pain!!!

Citricidal is amazing, from health food shops. It's grapefruit seed extract, I think. Really works but you MUST dilute it

saintmaybe · 14/02/2007 17:05

Either strong solution as a gargle or much weaker to swallow

Beetrootccio · 14/02/2007 17:18

If you have swollen gladns then I think you have an infection and will need antibiotics. I get one hell of a sore throat every few years and the ONLY thing that cures it is a quick dose or AB's. If it is related to a cold then any of the below will do I think

MerlinsBeard · 14/02/2007 17:18

can't really see muchin my throat, am going to try these things and see how i go b4 i go to Dr - don't fancy a 3 hour wait (not kidding) with 2 children lol!
