What's causing this blood? (WARNING: GROSS photo included!)

My husband has just sent me the below pic from work with the caption 'well, this doesn't look too good...' WHAT THE HELL!? He's had a cold/virus for a few weeks now, won't go to the doctor (standard) and has been blowing his nose quite aggressively. I thought at first it could just be burst capillaries but that looks like a clot! Is his brain coming out? (Gross pic to follow)

(Not a dr) but that looks like more than aggressive nose blowing gunk to me. He really needs to get it checked.

Probably a sinus infection but other conditions need to be ruled out. A trip to the GP is needed but you can't make him go.

Get him to the doctor! I know bleeding anywhere from the head looks worse than it is but it's better to be safe than sorry.
