not eating or drinking elder

my granddad isn't eating or drinking.we cant see why.we can see there is almost this fear.anxiety or something stopping him. but hes getting infections and becoming so ill because of it.he just wont consume.and cant explain it himself.
any ideas.please help. this isn't like him.he is the strongest most independent man I know.wise,trong and the man of our family.
this has knocked us for six.
hes becoming lost and frail and still,can.not.eat.
he often starts to gag now too when he tries. I'm scared.please help

He could have a condition that's making him unable to swallow, or one that's making him too ill to digest anything. He really must have a appointment with the GP. It sounds as if there's a possibility that it's urgent. Even if it is serious, there's help for him.

My dad was like this. He was very independent, well very stubborn really, lived by himself. I did his shopping & noticed that he just wasn't using any of the things I'd bought. If I made him something, even a drink, he wouldn't touch it, said he'd have it later.
He'd got very thin but insisted he was fine & absolutely refused to see a doctor. Eventually he had a fall & was admitted to hospital. They found that he had ulcers I his throat & all the way down into his stomach.
Get him to see a doctor, if he will, before he gets as bad I case it's something similar.

footle he has been seeing the doctors.in and out of hospital with infections,partly now due to not consuming or getting nourishment.
sorry I should have made it clear.he has been getting treatment initially for a fall.but then on returning home this all began.and now even gags at the thought of food.twice been back into hospital and on returning home cant eat or drink again.

thanks darklane this sounds so familiar. he has been seen and is really poorly.he did cough up blood so I'm wondering about the ulcers thing.
but its almost like some mental block.he cant gt himself to nourish.
I don't know what to do.he is on a ward now but will be returning once levels are ok.so how do we help him.
I could think if he could see a councilor or similar in hospital?try and eek out what could be causing the mental block to him but would it help.his age,his mind set and set ways would he let them help?i don't know.but this behaviour will kill him and I'm sick with worry.

Is he very elderly ?
