What would happen to dd if i had to go into hospital? Sooo worried

HI, I'm really worried that would happen to dd (4months) if I had to go into hospital as she refuses point blank to take a bottle and won't even go to sleep for dh. I've been quite ill since Monday and was diagnosed with a kidney infection and a throat infection on Wednesday and prescribed antibiotics. Unfortunately they didn't work and I was prescribed another course on Friday (after being given some that I found were incompatible with bf AFTER getting home). GP said that if they made me sick or if they hadn't worked within 48 hours they'd have to admit me to hospital and I really don't know how we'd cope. I still don't feel well, my back is burning from my kidney and I feel generally unwell although I am feeling a good bit better than I was so they could be starting to work...

She screams if we try to give her a bottle of ebm and if dh tries to get her to sleep she thinks it's play time and fights him off until she ends up crying and over tired. We've had a really difficult week already (it was also our first family holiday!)

Any advice/ similar experiences?

I don't know about the hospital side of it hayls - perhaps you could have her with you or brought to you for feeds??? - but it would really help your kidneys if you drink a lot of water, and I mean pints of it. Don't glug back a pint in one go, just keep drinking a couple of mouthfuls constantly.

Hayls, that's a difficult situation for you to be in when you're not feeling 100%. I hope you're alright. Are any of your family and friends living near by, as would it be possible to ring them and pre-empt them on the situation and say that they could have to be over at the drop of a hat (much like you have to be when your friends have needed someone to sit when you're in labour and have a ds/dd (broadly speaking)). If you haven't could you talk to your health visitor and she might me very gemed up on this kind of thing and have a good solution to your predicament. btw I hope you manage to sort this soon, wishing lots of luckxxx

i think she'd be allowed to be with you. you'd probably get your own room because of this

Hayls, she'd be fine. Your husband would be in for it, but in the end, she'd drink the bottle and fall asleep out of exhaustion.

I was in the hospital overnight when my first was 6 weeks old -- he was fine and I expressed there (pumped and dumped, although I know now I didn't need to dump).

Kidney infections are evil, aren't they? They only get worse, so if you feel better, the antibiotics are probably working.

And rest hayls, kidney infections really can wipe you out - give your body and the antibiotics chance to do what they can by doing knack all, drink lots of water and feed your dd and drink water and feed your dd. The most you should be doing is watching tv or maybe exerting yourself by reading a book
Rest, drink, feed dd, thats all you are allowed to do (say "Yes Auntie Lisa" )

Thanks. Both our families are a 6 hour drive away so they can't really help too much but my mum has sadi if I have to go into hospital she'll fly down asap. I'm hoping I won't have to as I'm fairly sure I'm starting to feel a bit better now, my back's still burning a fair bit and my throat hurts but the shivers have stopped and my temperature's come down- it had gone up to 39. I really wish now that I'd persevered with ebm when she was a bit younger then I wouldn't be stressing as much now.

JJ, they tested a urine sample and my gp wants me to go back after the antibiotics to have some tests to try to find out why I got this. I think it's probably because I haven't slept properly for months and am just a bit run down.

Worse thing is dh is now starting to feel ill as well...

I'm just not going to think about it too much. It's horrible though, it feels as though I have to put my health over my dd's health as tho I might get better in hospital she won't be getting healthy breast milk while I'm there.

Sorry to go on, but how long would I have to not feed for before my milk supply slowed/ stopped?

OK I'm going to be brutal here - Stop worrying!! If you do have to go in I am sure that you won't be the first mum in this position. I am sure that you will beable to keep DD with you and all the wards are geared up with pumps if you think you may need to express. It will take ages before your breast milk stops being produced ( I still had milk 6 months after stopping, but then I am a bit of a Freisan!!)and if it drops a little it can soon be built up just the way that it was when she was younger by lots of feeds. All this worrying will only get you more stressed! Rest, sleep and drink and I am sure that you will be over the worst soon. Hope that you get better soon

Hayls, this was something I always dreaded happening when dd was that age. She was similar in that she relied on me for a lot and wouldn't touch a bottle. But now looking back I realise she would have been ok. Even if you can't keep dd with you (which you likely can) in hospital, then you can get dh to bring her in for feeds and you'd only need to express probably once depending how much she feeds in the night now. They'd survive. Your longer term health is more important.

Sorry if I sounded harsh! I experienced the other way round when DD was 6 months old. He was rushed into hospital as an emergency with a bowel condition (loads of blood in nappy - VERY worried about him). All I could think about was my blessed milk!! The staff were so used to it they had everything ready for me to express and were really supportive - all my worrying was totally unfounded. I was able to stay with him on OK, a crappy put me up bed, but I am sure that it would work the other way round too. Perhaps other mums have had a similar experience? PS DS was fine eventually and is now a strapping lad of 13 months!!

I hope you start feeling a little better, maybe these antibiotics will work for you, i hope so, it is hard enough having a four month old without feeling ill. The only experience i have of this is when my child was 4 months old i had to leave him. It was an emergency and i didn't even have time to think about it. When i got home 3 days later, daddy and boy were fine, and baby was bottle feeding, he was happy and dad was very proud, it actually did them good. (he had dressed him in clothes for a newborn and ds's feet were starting to grow upwards but we can't have it all)

Hayls Try not to worry. I was admitted to hospital when ds3 was a breasfed baby. I had my own room and he was allowed to stay. Hope you feel better soon

Thanks everyone (Poppyseed you weren't harsh at all- just repeating what dh keeps saying). Amazingly I'm feeling a lot better this morning, probably helped by the fact that dd only woke for one feed during the night for the VERY first time and I actually got some sleep. I've still got little energy so dh has just taken her out in the car to get her to have a nap. SO things are looking promising, although from your replies we'd have probably been fine anyway!

Hayls - I had to go into hospital for two nights with ds at the same age as your dd. I wasn't bf, but I managed to get very anxious about bizarre things - floods of tears about dp having difficulties folding the buggy, for example! Needless to say everyone pulled through just fine, and once I'd had my operation etc. I was focused on myself and stopped the worrying!

Nag, nag, nag sounds just like my mum and dh, it's like surround sound! Appetite has come back with a vengeance so I'm munching as much as I can (also getting through bottles of water) then am having an early night. I really couldn't see any light at the end of the tunnel a few hours ago but I really feel as though I'm turning round a corner at the top of a very steep hill now!

THe hospital scenario is becoming less likely methinks...

Hayls, I'm glad you're feeling better. I had to go into hospital for a D&C when ds2 was three wks old. He came with me and I had my own room. The staff brought him to me in the night and I think were rather thrilled to have a baby on the ward!
