Root canal

Sad Hi all. Had some good advice from this section before on something unrelated. Anyways.. I had RCT on an upper front tooth (second one on right) a week ago and it's still tender to touch. Just wondering if this is normal? I had a bump in a car a few years ago and knocked my tooth which eventually caused the root to die and the tooth to discolour. I had slight pain in the tooth On and off for a while so my dentist went in to do a full clean out and root canal. The tooth doesn't look any different and the dentist said no infection was present so it should just settle down now. It's improving slightly every day but definitely still tender and a little pressure is always present. Feels like I've bumped it again and every day is getting a little better but everywhere i look online says it shouldn't hurt after 2-3 days! Hmm Any advice welcome?!

Generally if they're going to flare up they do it immediately
The fact that it's getting slowly better is a good sign. I'd get a second opinion from your dentist though

I have had several RCT, thinking I may need another one!
Anyway mine do take a few days to settle down, dentist said before it can take up to a week.

It should settle down gradually over a week post-root canal.
Your finished root treatment symptoms definitely sound positive (am a dentist).
From a patient perspective, I also had to have root canal in my central incisor-similar trauma to you-& it took about 3 months to stop grumbling post-op.
It was beautifully root-filled and no infection etc, but just felt tender for quite a while afterwards.

It could be tender because the filling is high on the bite, go and get it checked with your dentist.

I've had 3 RCs, by 3 different dentists, as well as some fairly deep fillings, and I've always been told 'give it a couple of weeks'. My latest one was still a little sensitive after a month or so. When I next had a checkup dentist asked me why I had not come back, accepted that it was simply because I did not want to, and^^ told me that it was OK as long as the discomfort is diminishing over time, but if it ever got at all worse, I was to come straight back to him.

Over 2 years for me with one of my front teeth and it has never settled. My dentist does not believe me. Angry

Thanks for the further replies. Feels the same is not slightly better than yesterday but still very tender to bite on . Always can I ask if yours is still painful or does it just feel slightly different? 2 years is a long time and I know I couldn't cope for 2 years wth how it feels now !

It aches 24/7 and when I bite on it it tingles. It comes and goes - I can have weeks when I forget about it and then it kicks back in. It's a low grade annoyance that I often don't notice when busy, but when I'm trying to sleep it seems quite uncomfortable. After the first root canal it was really painful and didn't stop hurting. Dentist then referred me to a specialist who redid the filling and the pain reduced but didn't go away. Faced with a choice of further work and putting up with it (and my own dentists advice to just put up with it) that's what I've done. I could pay another £500 for another treatment but have little faith it would make any difference. I would see how you feel in 6 months. Let the dentist know you are still in pain and see how it is in a few months.

Thank you for replying again! I'm hoping the pain/sensation reduces over the next week or so. Have an appointment in a few weeks anyway for something else so will see what they say then! I'm also wondering if I should have had antibiotics as a precaution even though no real infection was detected at the time of the treatment?! Who knew a tooth could cause so much hassle , I hate teeth after this! Sad
