My 81 yr old father has fractured his pelvis in two places - missed the seat and landed on the floor. Hospital have sent him home! He's pretty immobile. W're not sure what to do - how much movement to avoid clots, what about toileting etc, should we get/be entitled to some sort of nursing/home help with getting him in and out of bed etc. Can anyone please give me some advice? Thanks.

My mother's done this twice & both times she was sent to a rehabilitation hospital where she spent weeks, even months, healing and then doing physical therapy. I can't believe the hospital has sent your father home! Especially at his age! Can't you get a home-care nurse to come at least once a day?

Unfortunately I can't give you any advice because I'm not familiar with healthcare in the UK but hopefully someone who is can point you in the right direction... good luck!

Thanks for replying Sauce. I'm shocked too. They offered nursing home but he refused - the nursing home is local and does not offer any rehab/physio etc - it's more an old folks home.

hmmm - GP might be able to get him into a reablement type place - but if he refused admission to what was offered would he go to this place?

It could be that the "nursing home" is acyually used by local OT's and physios for residential rehab - this is how I work - but perhaps he wouldn't have known that?

Have a word with GP ifyou are worried about him being at home

When did this happen understress?

Thanks for the replies. Plan on speaking to his gp first thing in the morning and believe hospital will be arranging for social worker to visit tomorrow to assess needs for care at home. He fell last night and said it was sore but refused to go to hosp then so we said we'd wait til this morning and see how he was then. When he couldn't put weight on his leg, we called out of hrs gp who arranged ambulance to A&E for x-ray. He's still at hospital at the moment - they've given him a painkilling injection and are waiting for that to take effect to see whether he will be able to travel home by car. Why they won't admit him for tonight I simply don't know.
