Colonoscopy with biopsys taken reassurance needed

I had a colonoscopy at the start of August, the person who did it said things looked normal but they had taken 4 biopsys (which is normal I think). I have had my appointment to see the consultant again which is at the end of September which happens to be in a different part of the hospital which houses the big cancer centre (my appointment is in surgical out patients which i think is where they also do endoscopy etc and is on a different floor to the cancer but I think ) but is with my original gastroenterologist obviously this has started to make me think of worse case scenario's not helped by the fact I have just found out I am pregnant. I know no one can tell me my results but I just want positive stories and talking down a bit,

(GP married to hospital doc here) Don't worry. Surgical outpatients is totally separate to cancer specialities even if it's just in same building. And it would be incredibly unusual for a normal looking scope to have cancer on biopsy. Generally they do these biopsies on normal scopes to exclude 'microscopic colitis' ie low level inflammation that's not visible to the naked eye. Hope you can relax a bit, waiting for test results is always hard.

Hi, my dh had one last week and they took a biopsy of a polyp. Apparently this is very very common, I think 1 in 4 of us have these in the bowel. He had a consultant appointment a few days later and was told totally benign. I would try not to worry.

I have had this a few times and recently when I was about six weeks pregnant. I got my results from my biopsies by letter even earlier than my appointment, so I'm really hopeful that you might have your mind put at rest even earlier.

Do you have an IBD? Another reason for biopsies is to check for the presence of infection (I forget the specific name for what it is that they check for) to ensure that if you're flaring it hasn't spread to the rest of your body.

Thanks for replying everyone, they didn't find any polyps and I haven't had an ibd diagnosis they just want to rule stuff like that out before diagnosing ibs cos i have had reflux and a dodgy stomach since my mmc last year (probably stress) it's just the waiting is awful, I am glad to hear so many people have had good outcomes

Colorectal Secretary here I would not worry it takes about 2 weeks to get results from biopsies and if there was anything sinister you would not be waiting so long for a follow up. Being seen in a different part of the hospital could be down to something simple as an extra clinic and that is where there is room availability.

If they told you it looked normal it probably did. They would have told you if they saw a polyp or a lump - they most likely took random biopsies. Please try not to worry.

I've had several colonoscopies as I have Crohn's disease, and they take biopsies every time. It's completely routine. As others have said, if they thought everything looked normal on the scope it's unlikely a biopsy would show anything sinister. It's natural to worry though.

A week to go until my appointment and I am starting to get anxious, not helped by the fact I have spent a few days this week walking past said cancer centre as had to visit the hospital as sadly I mc. I am wishing the rest of the week away

Sadly baby wasn't meant to be so haven't thought about this appointment while dealing with that, but I got told by epu that was now sorted yesterday which is why I am panicking about this appointment.

The waiting is a bloody nightmare, I hope u hear something soon.

loz I was lucky that in my area they send biopsy results by post before your appointment, so at least I know that I haven't got that to worry about- instead I'm waiting to find out if I have now got Crohns, not UC.

Back at work unfortunately although may be a good thing.

Hopefully once you know what's going on they can do something so you start feeling better.

The hospital I am going to didn't do the biopsys they had to outsource as couldn't meet targets otherwise which is a bit rubbish really which is why I may not have a letter tbh the lady who phoned to make my appointment thought it was an initial one not a follow up and had to double check so I am hoping that they have results the process takes forever x

Gosh! That is crap! Do you mind me asking what the colonoscopy was for? Do you have anyone else you could contact to find out what the results were before the appointment?

Sorry for not replying Scary ds and dh have been ill for last few days I have managed to somehow avoid it.

It was cos I had some bleeding and having to get up a few times a night for loo accompanied with acid reflux and family history of dodgy polyps

Got my results back colonoscopy was normal thank god and cos of my age not going to investigate reflux yet to keep going with my now ttc friendly meds.
