So, discovered my DS had nits last Friday. We treated with Derbac M the same day. Have combed morning and night and found lots of nits - about 30 on the Friday, then about 10 the next day and have continued to find between 2-10 every day since then all up the hair and none close to his head.
Treated again 3 days later with Hedrin treat and go and am going to treat again tomorrow as that's 7 days later.
Is this normal? Does it sound like we're getting on top of it? He starts school on Tuesday....
Also, I've had my hair checked and can't find anything but I'm itching like mad!! Am I mad imagining it or should I treat myself even if there is no sign of nits/lice?

Treat everyone at once and fresh bedding that night, with another go a week later. Lots of peeps say bedding will be fine but I have found crawlers before. Hedrin is my one of choice. If DS will let you, the nitty gritty combs are ace (and on a free prescription). Put plenty of conditioner in and comb out, you have to be very very thorough, but it works if you are. You need to rinse the comb in water or wipe on tissue (and wail at your revolting harvest). Could be worse my dd has picked them up twice and has hair 2 ft long. Takes Feckin hours.

The best way to keep on top of head lice is to plaster the hair in loads of conditioner, leave for about 5 mins then comb through three times a week. The key thing is to leave it on for 5 mins before combing as otherwise lice can crawl from uncombed to combed hair (Lice breathe through holes in their shells, conditioner blocks them and the lice fall asleep when their oxygen is used up apparently)
Our area will no longer prescribe any lotions, combs, etc and advise to buy them

Comb loads of conditioner through , I've never been keen on combing insecticide through my kids hair!

No combs and lotions on prescription in my area either.
Please don't treat everyone if they don't have crawling lice, that's very outdated advice.
Derbac M is a old treatment and about 80% of lice are resistant to it and it's no longer a recommended treatment.
I've always had good results with headrin and a nitty gritty comb. The treatment works by killing live crawling lice so you need to make sure that you treat 7-10 days after the first treatment and comb the hair every day for at least 2 weeks to catch any that may be missed

Normal ime. I'd treat yourself but agree nitty gritty shampoo and comb are best, especially for repeated treatments. It leaves hair gloriously conditioned, unlike other stuff.

We experienced lice for the first time a few weeks ago in my eleven year old. she had the thickest, curliest hair down to her bum.

I used lyclear then combed it with conditioner in for about an hour and a half. Found about twenty eggs and one live louse. A week later I rechecked as per the advice on the packaging. Found four live lice that I think hatched out missed eggs. No new eggs. Combed her hair for about two hours with conditioner. Then two nights later I done the same. Found nothing. Have since looked again and got the all clear.

I think we were very lucky that she only seemed to of had one live louse to begin with for a few days. Figured out she caught it from my niece or her friend who both had a lot more than her when I told their parents and they checked them. She'd had a sleep over with them three nights before.
