Very stupidly I haven't been to the opticians in years. I have noticed that if I close one eye my sight is much worse in one eye. I will make apoinment with an optician soon but is this normal?

Not normal, but certainly not unusual. Eyes are often mismatched for long or short-sightedness. Don't fret - the optician will sort you out!

I thought it was normal... eyesight can degenerate unevenly.
My night vision is much better in one eye over the other eye, too.
