Weird spitting thing DD age 4 is doing. She's been sent home from Pre-school. What could be wrong with her?

Pre-school rang me to collect DD1. They said she kept dribbling/spitting as if she couldn't swallow properly. They suspected swollen glands might be making her not want to swallow.

They also mentioned her having a funny taste in her mouth. I asked her about the funny taste and got a nonsensical answer, so I am not sure if the Pre-school teachers put the idea in her head.

Every so often she spits (I've givenm her a flannel to spit into) but she looks well in herself and is perfectly able to swallow water from a bottle

I don't mind that Preschool sent her home. They said she wasn't her usual self and I trust them to know. But I can't work out if she is ill or not. She has got paint around her neck and chin and I wonder if she ate some paint or licked a brush. I phrased the question to her in many different ways so that she could answer yes without thinking she would in trouble but so far she hasn't said she did have paint in her mouth - so maybe that's not it.

Any other ideas?

She keeps saying she wants to go to her swimming lesson this afternoon.

maybe you should take her to the doctor to see what the problem is.

hhmmmm, maybe her glands are swollen or infected, has she a temperature.I think I would get it checked out aswell.

We had a strange spate of illnesses a few months ago which involved sore mouths. It started with ds1 who kept swallowing and drooling and saying that his mouth hurt.
It was put down to a nasty virus, you can just sometimes get these strange viral things from nowhere

Docs to be on safe site, especially in case she's eaten paint!

safe side even

DS was incredibly dribbly when he had hand, foot and mouth. Might be a possibility?

wurlywurly · 30/01/2007 12:08

pooka ds1 had that a coupl of years ago.

pooka · 30/01/2007 12:10

Horrible, isn't it? thing is we didn't really realise til it had almost gone - just thought he had become rather grumpy!

wurlywurly · 30/01/2007 12:14

we only knew as my nephew had these tiny blisters come up on his feet so my sister took him to the emergency gp and thats what they said it was and ds1 had the same blisters.

pooka · 30/01/2007 12:17

We thought ds needed new shoes
I'm a BAAAAAD mother

She's so well though!

I'll watch out for strange blisters/rashes or a temperature.

Would swallowing some paint be very serious? Isn't it non-toxic?

Should I be able to feel if her glands are swollen?

It may be an allergy. My son is allergic to nuts. When he has hazlenuts his mouth fills with saliva and he says it tastes funny.
