ds1 who is eleven started feeling ill a couple of hours ago

headache
threw up (once)
temperature

i would probably not be too worried except he has icy cold hands and feet.
also the calpol i gave him an hour ago hasn't helped.

is it o.k to just keep him comfy at home?
my only option really is A & E and he doesn't look distressed or unhappy enough to make me think it's an emergency.

i'm scared of meningitus and suchlike

Ring NHS direct. 0845 46 47

PinkTulips · 27/01/2007 16:26

does he have severe sensitivity to light and noise? a rash? sore neck? if he has none of these i'd say he's probably fine but keep an eye on him

NAB3 · 27/01/2007 16:27

You don't need to have all the symptoms of meningitis to have it. It you are that worried you need to ring or go to A&E.

cheeryface · 27/01/2007 16:30

well the tele is on and thats not bothering him, nor the light i don't think.

he doesn't have a rash but looks mottled, but, he does tend to be a bit mottly anyway

like the others have said if your really worried bring him down or ring out of hours docs but tbh if it were one of mine i'd be more worried about what they'd catch down at a&e than them having mengingitis if they seem pretty well.

tortoiseSHELL · 27/01/2007 16:33

I would ring NHS DIrect, and in the time they take to get back to you, it might become clearer!

Twiglett · 27/01/2007 16:35

give him nurofen too .. calpol stabilises a temp, nurofen reduces it .. if it doesn't come down within 30 - 40 minutes then I'd take him to A&E

cheeryface · 27/01/2007 16:59

shit, i dont have any nurofen and he has fallen asleep on the settee now

sleep will probably do him a lot of good though.. just keep an eye on him

he has woken up, thrown up and its made him have a nosebleed. he sometimes has them but i got it to stop and he has been sick again and made it bleed again.

phoned my docs and their answerephone gives a number for out of hours, never used to, so have phoned that and am waiting for someone to call back.

poor ds1 is feeling very sorry for himself now and ds2 is also very fed up as he is terrified of being sick!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

poor ds1. My ds1 has been ill this weekend as well - spent all yesterday throwing up, then has spent today lying on the sofa drifting in and out of sleep with a bit of a temperature, but he has just eaten 2 bowls of cereal and is now leaping off the sofa.

My dd gets nosebleeds - horrible isn't it. Hope he's better soon!

tribpot · 27/01/2007 17:43

Hope you can get some joy with the Out of Hours service. They may want you to go down to the Out of Hours centre (just so you know) but hope one way or another ds1 is feeling better soon.

carlsberg · 27/01/2007 17:47

Hope you get on ok. Our out of hours service tells you they will phone within the hour and they always have done, so hopefully they will ring soon.

cheeryface · 27/01/2007 18:02

thanks, the nosebleed has stopped now and he says he feels a little better.

don't know what i'd do without mumsnet, always makes me feel better that i can ask other mums
