Strange transient rash - any ideas ?

ds (4) came up in a strange rash at nursery 2 days ago. It consists of very red patches with white bumpy areas (several cm in size) within some of the the red areas. When he's undressed it looks awful and his crotch /buttocks are the worst plus his face.

The skin is not broken at all, so no discharge or weeping from it, but it is clearly very itchy as he keeps scratching at the most affected areas.

The weirdest thing is that the rash areas come up and go down and appear somewhere else a couple of hours later.

Cold nappy rash cream has helped and last night we put calamine lotion on and this eased the itching.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing it ?

Bad Mother confession time

On the day the rash started he was wearing a brand new top and trousers which had not been washed before he first wore them !

Do I feel guilty or do I feel really guilty !

I've never washed new clothes - didn't realise you had to!

I don't normally but my mother's generation clearly did as it was her that suggested that this might be the cause of the rash.
