Titanium pin fitting for dental work

My ds has had a brace for almost two years to help make space to have some pins and porcelin teeth inserted. His gaps are almost at the right size to have the next work done; the pins fitted into his jaw.
My question is this. Are these pins fitted using local or general anaesthetic? He is quite adamant he wants to be knocked out when they do it, but I am pretty sure I've read its done under local.
He has an appointment next week so will ask then, but I just wanted to see if any of you know before then. Thanks!

These are questions only your dentist can answer next week.
If it's implants your son is due to have placed , it may be that intravenous sedation with midazalom, plus local anaesthesia, is an option.
It is extremely unlikely that General Anaesthesia would be offered, as this needs hospital input.Your post doesn't make clear whether there is any hospital input.

I think I know what you're referring to as there's a good chance I'll be needing the same when I get my braces. Apparently it's under local and my orthodontist classed it as a very simple procedure. Saying that ,I did have a bone graft and then the implant placement under only a local as I was too tight to fork out £800 for a general

How old is DS? Agree general is highly unlikely as would need to be done in hospital.

In no way can placing an implant ever be categorised as a " simple procedure"

The only patients who would ever possibly be considered for implant placement under GA, would be those for e.g. head + neck cancer patients who have lost significant amounts of teeth as a direct consequence of their illness.

Many patients confuse GA with IV sedation. Most importantly the patient is conscious during IV sedation.

He is 17, and is being seen in the hospital ortho department.

I am aware of the difference between sedation and ga/la. He is very nervous of needles due to a bad experience when he was young in our local a&e dept. I was just hoping to hear from someone who has already had the procedure, so I can be mentally prepared for when he comes home after his appointment.

17 is very young to be talking about implants. I really think you need to understand more about the procedure yourself before it goes ahead otherwise DS hasn't got a chance.

Two of his teeth on tne top row never grew, so he has large gaps, and low self confidence about smiling and generally about his appreance.

He was refered to the hospital via our dentist, and is having all things brace related (tightening etc) done there. He only has check ups for his teeth health at our dentist.

I am a little confused as to why my topic title was in any way vague. Its exactly what I was asking about.

Dentist here. I'd be very surprised if they offer general. It will be local + sedation if he wants it. Sedation is AMAZING! I had it recently for a gastroscopy. Was really scared but have no recollection of it at all, was so easy, would totally do it again!

My DH has has a large number of titanium implants. He had the work done under local anaesthetic - injections. He was fine with the procedures, uncomfortable but not painful.

Sorry ,I thought you were referring to the anchors they drill in above your teeth when wearing braces to help move your teeth up. That's what my dentist referred to as a simple procedure. As for implants ,you don't feel anything under local but the sensation was enough to put me off getting another one done anytime soon. I did have the option to pay for a general but worked out nearly a grand and I couldn't really afford it.

After the procedure I had a lot of swelling in the area which lasted nearly a week and relied on painkillers for the first the first few days. My dentist provided codeine ,ibuprofen and a ice/heat pack ,along with corsodyl mouthwash.

I had a dental implant screw fitted on saturday for a top front tooth. I absolutely didnt want sedation, but asked for numbing gel to be used before the locals. That stuff is bloody amazing, you really dont feel the needles at all! Theres been absolutely no pain at all, had a fabulous trout pout yest morning but already looking better today. The precautionary meds im taking are making me feel a bit shit, but thats been the worst part.

Ds had his appointment today and has been told its under ga, which he is relieved about. We shall see what it is when the time comes.

Ga would prob be for the best if he has needles issues, my implantologist spent 15 mins(yes I was clock watching lol) slowly putting in the local.

15 mins just putting in the local!? Oh my word. My dentist spent approx 30 secs putting in one to do the pre crown work on a root canal filled tooth (I dont know the exact time, I had my eyes shut ;) ) and that was long enough!

Of course it's not. The more Time spent putting anaesthetic in, the better. I was just puzzled at your confused face and your comment about the gel. Seems that dentists can do no right on MN sometimes.

I'm surprised it's being done under GA I worked as a dental nurse in a dental hospital setting and did implant fitting fairly regularly. We pretty much had a glorified dental surgery and no facilities to carry out GA. However I guess it depends on how advanced your dental hospital is.

Also agree with mrsmorton that 17 is very young especially for boys, they tend to want to wait until you're finished growing before fitting implants

eh? the point of my post was that it didnt matter at all whether he did it in 2 seconds flat, as I couldnt actually feel anything in the first place, so in effect, wasting his own time.

He obviously has time to spare then. make sure you give him some feedback, I'm sure he'd appreciate your expertise in pain management.

He is 18 in Sept, so is pretty much fully grown. I didnt say he would be having them done soon, just that he was getting to the stage his gaps are getting to be the right size to go onto the next stage, and I wanted to be mentally prepared for what might happen. It might not even happen for anither year, who knows!
His dental work is being done in hospital, not at a dentists practise.
