Ive just had my gall bladder removed and am a litle confused about my diet now. i know i should have asked the doctor, but i get all flustered and tounge tied and just thanked him after the operation and wanted to get out of the hospital asap!! before i had the op i was told to be on a very low fat diet, which i did, and i asked my consultant if i needed to live on this diet for the rest of my life, he just replied no and moved on to something else. so now i dont know if i can eat as normal or be aware of how much fat is in my food? i hoped there may be some doctors or knowledgeable people who would be able to advise me without me having to go to see my gp. sorry its a bit muddled up but im not good at putting my words on to 'paper'!

Afaik it is ok to eat most things after the op. That said I find I don't tolerate fats too well, ie if I eat too much cheese or loads of chips I feel really nauseous. But other wise I can eat anything and you should be able to now too. And don't worry it is unlikely that you will ever have that pain again!

After having the gall bladder removed - what type of diet should a person be on?

A. A normal diet. Special dieting is not required after the gall bladder is removed, unless a diet is necessary for other unrelated problems such as diabetes.

My dad and MIL have had theirs out and carried on as normal.

Yes - since I've had my gall bladder out, I've been able to eat a completely normal diet. No particular restrictions etc.

ok thanks,i spoke to a nurse that had had it done and she told me she could eat anything and put on loads of weight, and my mother in law said her best friend had it done and she still had to watch what she ate because now there is nothing to break down the fat. but ive just had a quarter of thorntons and feel fine!!

There is still something (the bile?) to break down the fat - it just goes directly into the intestine without going through the gall bladder, which previously stored it. (I hope I've got that right - it's something along those lines).

I do have post choecsystectomy syndrome though, which means that every so often I get the same symptoms as before the gall bladder was removed. But most people don't get this, I'm just lucky
