Baby with blistered tongue - docs shut til 2pm - worried!!!

Nasty cold and spiking temp since Sunday, not been letting a bottle enter his mouth and not been doing much with breastfeeding. I've been syringing water into his mouth and today he agreed to ice lollies too.

Just opened his mouth for his medicine and he has blisters going back across hom tongue

a) whats it possible to be?
b) scale of 1-10 type thing how worried/panicking should I be (waiting for 2pm or calling emergency doc???)
c) is my bitten nipple gonna go all manky and infected with it?

Could it be hand, foot and mouth disease? My DS2 had it and it started with blisters (like mouth ulcers really) on his tongue. Then he got a few red spots on his hands and feet.

Hand, foot and mouth or thrush? Like Mrs W, my dd had h,f &m. Noticed tongue blisters first then blisters on fingers & feet next day...not too worrying if it is either of these.

our doctors is closed during lunch time too, but they give a emergency number you can call. i have rang this once before and spoke to a doctor who gave me advice. Could you do this?? for your ds hope all is well soon.

yep agree- check hands and feet for blisters as well. Sometimes I think the first herpes infection can be a bit like that as well. (future infections it becomes a cold sore).

If its hand foot and mouth then you don't really need to see a doc, unless he gets very ill, or you're worried.

As he's drinking I don't think you need to panic at all. They'll probably see you today anyway.

HF&M was what I could think of too... he's screaming his heart out again like he has been for days

He's drinking, but not a lot - wet nappies are few and far between

Only just over an hour to wait now though - I think they have a sit n wait thing from 2pm so I can go straight there. I was wanting to take him anyway for the constant temp.

Thrush flame? If you've go sore nipples could be you've got thrush too. I had it in my mouth as a child and it was full of ulcers.

I've only got sore nipples because he took a chunk out of one of them playing with a new tooth

DH is now pacing with him... just high pitched screaming Since the blisters have developed he is just inconsolable.

DS had HF&M recently too. Started with blisters on tongue that must have been really painful - he wouldn't eat. Once they went down he was fine - then he got them on his hands and feet but that didn't worry him.

Doc said that there is no 'cure' - they will go away in about 3-4 days.
Also, adults tend not to get it as they have generally built up immunity over time.

Back from docs... tis oral herpes - basically coldsores all over his tongue

The prescription I need is rare and nowhere seems to have it so far,s o at this rate he can't start treatment til tomorrow lunchtime.

He is refusing anything in his mouth now - even nipples. I was told he needs between 250 & 500 ml fluids min on top of his breastmilk, but he's not taking the milk so I am guessing the 500 end is needed. I have measured it out and we are attacking him with a syringe as often as possible.

If he doesn't get all the fluids, they want to see him tomorrow to probably admit for a tube. Just fought 20ml in him but he refusing point blank to take any more.

If it helps, ds1 is kicking the house down in a temper. I do not know what has happened to him lately. All this because I wouldn't let him watch CBeebies

I have managed to get it - he's out cold for the first time in hours though so I'm giving him an hour or so before I have to upset him again.

He's eaten a few bits, but still not much joy on the fluids. We keep sneaking a bit in with the syringe and then he fights off any fresh attempts/spits it out.

Did they prescribe acyclovir?? Not sure when they do/don't but ds1 was prescribed it by the hospital for eczema herpeticum (he had eczema infected with herpes basically across his entire body). You can get it in liquid form. I'm sure I've heard of it being given for oral herpes as well. If it carries on and he still doesn't drink I would ask about it. There may be a medical reason why they don't routinely prescribe it (other than cost! It's expensive).

Hope he's better soon, poor thing.

His temp is back up (although he slept from about 1.30-7.30am next to DH who has a temp, so its not surprising his has raised with the heat, plus lack of meds in that time).

He has a couple of small feeds yesterday evening, and one bigger one this morning with decent strength suck iyswim. Only managed to get about 150ml of other fluids in him though.

Just changed his nappy and it is wet, but not very considering he's been in it 8 hours.

What now - his suck seems to have improved with the feeding, but its still a battle. Obv I don't want him being taken in if at all possible, but at the same time I don't want to keep him home out of my own hospital concerns when it might be what he needs.

Advice?

Oh, in himself he is alternating between wanting to feel better - attempting to go play (and getting very upset with the lack of strength in his legs), and just laying crying.

What a terrible time for you. I think I would take him in tbh. He needs fluids. If he doesn't get re-hydrated quickly it will prob take longer for him to get better.

Hopefully the drugs will work quickly.

Have you got his meds yet?
I'd make an appt to have him checked this afternoon, and keep trying with the feeding/fluids for a bit longer

I've got his meds now Jas (it was no calpol doses in the night because he slept and DH didn't want to wake him)
