urine infection in 3 year old - anyone been through this?

Did she have a urine sample sent off to the lab for culture?
How long has she been on the antibiotics?

My daugter had a UTI aged 2 and all children of this sort of age will usually require follow up by paeds once acute illness better to check no kidney problems(very small chance of this) and this usually needs an Ultrasound scan at least

Over xmas my daughter 2.5yrs was complaining of belly ache crying when going for a wee so took her to doctors with a sample and she had urine infection.

She was put on antibiotics for 5 days which cleared it up and her urine was sent away.

Doc said it was prob due to a bit too much sugar in diet which i agreed as you no what its like over xmas! Sweets everywhere we went!

Drinking plenty of water will help and keep diet quite bland ie not too much acidic foods and sugars.

It depends on the local protocol so check with your own GP.
Most do recommend follow up but it depends on the area
She will get better if the bacteria that caused her infection is being treated with the right antibiotic.
Sometimes the bacteria responsible is not killed by the antibitic used, adn that is why a urine culture is useful.
If she is on the right antibiotics, she should have got better that is why I am wondering how long she has been on the antibiotics?

Hi Lisa, my DD has had a few urine infections unfortunately. When she had the first one, she was on Amoxycillin for a week which cleared it up, but she also got referred to hospital for an ultrasound scan on her kidneys - just in case it was something more serious. I made the huge mistake of telling her that scans don't hurt - it did, so please bear this in mind if your's has to have one! Luckily her scan showed nothing abnormal.

She has had a few urine infections since, and each time, my GP has alternated her antibiotics (Eg. last time was Amoxycillin, this time Trimethoprim, next time Amoxycillin) Last time was about a year ago, and GP said that if it happens again, she will have to go on antibiotics long-term for 6 months. So far, so good

Poor mite, I do hope she recovers soon. UTI's can be quite painful for little ones (think how much cystitis hurts us).

dd had a few when she was a baby and unforunately it turned out she did have a congenital kidney and bladder abnormality. These usually present before the age of 1 year though so if she is odler than this, chances are this is a one off.

dd1 had 3 diagnosed UTIs when she was 3. She had a detailed scan using an injected dye which showed her urinary tract to be normal and was on trimethoprim for 6 months to protect her kidneys. Thank goodness she has never had another one but at the first sign of any discomfort I start forcing water down her! Hope your dd recovers soon, it really does take it out of them and she may be a bit floppy and clingy for a while.

That sounds like the antibiotics are working but she probably shouldn't be getting any more fevers now she is on Day 3 of the antibiotics.
My DD started on trimethoprim and after 5 days of treatment had to start a different antibiotic as the first hadn't worked, which was really awful , but is ounds like your DD is getting better which is good.
UTIs are reasonably common in girls, and should always be investigated under a year old for things like congenital kidney problems, but in older children , the jury is out as to whether they need extensive investigation or not.
My DD who was 2 was refered to the paeds who offered an USscan but we didn't chase it up as the paediatrician wasn't adamant that we needed it and she has not had any UTIs since. I think if she got another I would opt for referral and USscan but so far no further infections

Lisa - My DD's kidney scan hurt because they pressed it down quite hard onto her lower belly / pelvis and out towards her hips and I think they hurt her bones, poor thing! I had only ever had a scan when I was pregnant which didn't hurt, which I told her about, but I forgot that when I had mine, I had a flippin' great big baby in the way, so of course mine didn't hurt!! Ooops
