Anyone any ideas?

It's always in the same place, back of my right leg just below the knee - usually it's the same size as a 5p but this time it's longer - about 3cm x 1cm.

Is it a varicose vein? It's balck and purple round the edge !

Sounds like a spontaneous bleed. People sometimes get this when they're on blood-thinning medication, such as aspirin or heparin. It shouldn't happen in a healthy, unmedicated person. TBH I think I would go to the GP.

I wonder whether it's possible to get a bleeding varicose vein that'ts too deep inside to protrude the way varicose veins usually do.

Thanks prettycandles, so you don't think I'd be being paranoid to go to the GP?

(sorry I disappeared for a bit then, bumped toddler to console!)

I don't think so. My mum takes low-dose aspirin, but can only take it on and off because it makes her bleed spontaneously. The skin doesn't break, she just gets bruises without being bumped, like you. When they become frequent she has to go off the aspirin for a while before she can start taking it again and so on.

thanks, I just wanted to check if it was one of those things I thought was weird and turns out to be completely normal!
