I might be having acupuncture today

Can anyone tell me something about it as I know very little.

And I know I could google but I'd like actual experiences from real people.

It's amazing.

I've had it for fertility issues, sinus issues and anxiety.

It can be a bit twingey when the needles go in, but just for a split second.

So relaxing.

What are you having it for?

It's brilliant! Had my 1st ever session Friday and was nervous as a recovering needle phobic but I had 13 put in and the only 1 I felt was like a mosquito bite on my ankle. I actually nearly dropped off to sleep on the table waiting for the needles to do their magic. I had it for pregnancy back ache and haven't had pain until this morning but I am due 4 sessions.

Ohhhh jealous! Have had this for sciatica after a car accident & wow. In fact I wonder if I can go for regular aches & pains? It felt amazing & I found it did help me xx Good luck !

I didn't go but I'm hoping to try today.

I've three areas of pain. Two I know what I did - fell down stairs twice and pulled my shoulder getting dressed after swimming but the third is my other shoulder and I don't know what I have done but the pain has spread of my chest and arm.

I've tried two physios and an osteopath and they helped the first session or so but then not. Even when doing the home exercises it didn't help and was no different when I didn't do them. Can't fully rest so it's a vicious painful circle.

I'm very stressed at the moment and I'm wondering if that is not helping the new shoulder pain.

I'm worries I'll cry too as I'm very emotional right now, crying at 3am when your DH is asleep next to you is not good, and if she asks how I am I might crumble.

You should let yourself crumble! Holding your anxiety and stress close to you won't be helping with the pain.

I've had a few sessions for fertility and tbh I haven't loved it. Haven't found it particularly relaxing but there is very slight discomfort and that's it. I have, though, enjoyed the questions and concern from the acupuncturist, and I think you should try to embrace that part of it too.

If you have a lot of emotional stuff to carry around, would you consider speaking with a counsellor or therapist?

I've come downstairs as I can't sleep and keep crying and don't know why.is so stupid and I just feel so sad.

It'll be all the stress. The first time I ever had a massage I was very stressed and cried! Like someone else said, embrace that part of it and let your emotions out.

I trained in a therapy that uses similar points to acupuncture. You might get very teary, during or after, and you might come away feeling full of flu. Don't let that put you off as it's usually the initial treatment that starts that, not the follow ups.

Good luck, it sounds like you need it but I guarantee you'll sleep like a log after.

Do it!! I'm going today too. For stress/anxiety/sleep issues. It's great. Super relaxing.

I agree don't worry about feeling a bit strange afterwards. I'm on session 3 now and after 1st I felt awful. Sleepy. But fluey. Really heavy.

But for me it works. I hope it does for you.

Have you been to your GP?

I don't think I can go today. I've been awake since 2am and have an 11 year old to look after. He'd get worried if I cried and I couldn't talk freely with him there.

I saw the GP after the first fall, well months later when I couldn't manage the pain, and he referred me to physio but I'm sat here crying and not really wanting to think about why and tablets won't help.

I just want peace and a break. Had two hours to my self since March..

Go!!! It will be a quiet moment for you. It is relaxing. It does feel unusual but overall it is worth it.

You really, really need to go to your GP. It sounds as if you need more than the placebo that acupuncture will give you. Rule everything else out first.

Your 11 year old will be fine alone at home while you go to the GP.

You really should go. You are in pain, which is leaving you unable to sleep, making you tired, meaning you r body can't heal, leaving you even more stressed. I have had lots of acupuncture, and it has always worked for me. Almost no pain involved. Take your 11 year old along with you if you want. They would stay in waiting room. IMO there is nothing wrong with explaining in advance you might be a bit emotional as you are nervous, but that everyone has to do things that they find a bit testing, throughout life.

Please, please, please go and get a proper diagnosis first.

If I was feeling brave I would admit I have three areas of pain physically and a lot emotionally that has been there for years. I'm also under the gynea department and awaiting counselling for something the gynea doc picked up on that has been cancelled and no sign of a new date as they can't get to grips with someone seeing two people. I'm scared how hard it will be to get well, scared I'll feel a fool for all the years spent hurting if it is easy to "cure" me and have no idea how I'm supposed to manage everything with a child at home 24/7.

It was fun the other night when DH put deep heat on me. I have asthma but normally deep heat is okay but not this time. I couldn't breathe all night, couldn't sleep either and still had the pain. I guess it was because it was near enough for me to breathe in even though I didn't think I had.

I saw the acupuncturist today. She "needled" for stress anxiety and period related stuff. I feel a bit floaty. It's nice.

I had about 20 needles in. Then a nice lavender eye bag and some plinky plunky music and was left on my own for about half an hour. To breathe. Dooooooo it.

It will help. I hope you have a good rapport with your acupuncturist as that is important.

At the very least you will get to lie down and relax for 20 mins or so, but hopefully it will improve your pain and balance your emotions. I have had it during periods of stress and anxiety. There are two point that helped me, the forehead between the eyes for anxiety and the top of head to lift spirits. Felt amazing afterwards, in fact spent the evening afterwards giggling. Enjoy!

I went last Thursday. I have cronic pelvic pain and PGP amongst other things. My acupuncturist is also my physio so I've been seeing him for years and we have a really good relationship.
I have the extra long needles because he wants to get close to the bone. It was my 5th session and I have never even felt a needle going in. And as a PP said I actually fell asleep on the table this week. Lol

Dakin1 - your post made me cry . I'm scared of letting the pain out as it will feel like I'm reliving it. I'm in physical pain this morning, did too much yesterday I guess, but the emotional pain is huge and I just know she'll ask how I am or why I'm there and I'll cry. Just someone showing they care is enough to make me cry at the moment .

I've not met her but I assume she'll be nice and it would be 45 minutes.

Going I am an acupuncturist.
Please don't feel it's an issue of you start crying because it really really isn't.
Unlike when you go and see your GP, you won't be in a rush and no acupuncturist worth their salt will make you unconfortable about it.
Beside, a lot of people come to see us when they are at the end of their tether, which means they are all more likely to cry (which is totally normal when you have spent a very long time in pain btw)

And the good thing about it acupuncture is that it's a holistic therapy so you will get relief from your physical pain but your acupuncturist will be able to also look at the emotional pain and take into account the gyne stuff.

Dakin I know quite a lot of people ask for that point between the eyes too

Thank you MYMN. Anytime anyone shows me kindness it makes me cry if I'm feeling low anyway as it was something that never happened as a child and lately I've been realising a lot about why I am the way I am emotionally and it is making me so sad. I feel such an idiot that I'm only realising something that happened as a child (mother hitting me for crying) means I never cry now about big stuff I should but will over stuff on the to, on here etc. What a prat.

Five weeks ago I finally had my first session for an injury due to a long time ago fall. Not as bad as expected and the pain is from something else. Lots of issues found and being resolved. It's my weekly time for me but it's helping me immeasurably and in ways I'd never have guessed.

I know some people think it's nonsense but it's not hurting them, it's helping me, I believe in it and would recommend anyone with problems, be they physical, mental or emotional, that they try it.

I've been told I probably have two issues medically, and two emotionally but I'm hopeful I'll be okay eventually..
