Effects of depo provera???

bcsnowpea · 18/01/2007 15:17

I'm a new mum (10 week old ds), and when ds was 8 weeks I had a depo provera shot (three month contraception coverage).

I've just started bleeding a little bit and am wondering if this is a normal mendtruation cycle, or unpredictable spotting? Have sny other mners taken this drug or similar? What were your experiences? Do you actually menstruate on the drug, or just spot?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!!!

I started on it back in March last year. I started bleeding very heavily and did so for 10 weeks - all the while being told that "It is normal to get some bleeding with it".
However, mine was changed to 10 weekly, and i get no bleeding whatsoever now.
If it gets very heavy, i wuld go and see your GP, especially if it happens after the second one as well, they may need to reduce the time between jabs

I had it for a year overall and i bled pretty much the whole time, on for a day, off for a day, on for a week, off for a week, i hated it and swore never again.

I had heavy spotting on and off for a couple of months after the first injection. Unfortunately I had other side effects so I didn't have the second.

This is quite normal for the first few jags. It does stop and then usually whole period stops.

ItsMeMellowma · 18/01/2007 16:56

It does not agree with some.

That's right mellow, it doesn't agree with everyone. My periods have now stopped completely, since getting it 10 weekly.

oxocube · 18/01/2007 17:59

I had it after dc2 and had the jab every 10 weeks. Took about 6 months after stopping to get pg with dc3. it agreed with me but not with everyone (poss weight gain as with the pill and intermittent/ unpredicable bleeding esp in first year in my case). But on the whole, I thought it was great.

Skribble · 18/01/2007 18:02

I had some light spotting then no periods (JOY OH OY), weight gain and stopped after about a couple of years as I was sure it was making my headaches worse TBH I think it they are just the same without taking it. Weight gain no worse than on the pill.

ItsMeMellowma · 18/01/2007 18:06

My periods stopped too, which was great but now I am coming off the injection, possibly to ttc and just know I am going to have two years of PMT/period pain!!

bcsnowpea · 18/01/2007 21:47

Thanks everyone. My GP did mention spotting and my sister (when taking the same) had one constant period, but I wanted a bit more personal experience info. It's not heavy, and seems to be on and off, so I guess I'll just have to see how my body handles it for the next few months.
