Blood and protein in urine

My DH has been feeling generally under the weather for a few weeks now. Not ill enough to be off work but he is tired, nauseous esp in the morning and also says he is very sweaty at night but no temperature.

Anyway by chance he had a well man check at work on Tues and his urine dipstick showed protein +++ and blood ++++. He was advised to contact his GP but hasn't done so as yet. He doesn't seem that concerned but I am and I want him to get it checked out.

So should I be worried? How serious is this likely to be?

It could just be a urine infection that's causing blood and protein. It's worth getting it checked out to make sure it's nothing serious.

Ok. Urine infection doesn't sound too serious and I guess easily treatable. I will tell DH it might be that as I wonder if he is worried it is something more serious which is why he isn't getting it checked out. Or perhaps he is just being lazy!

Please get him to get it checked out ASAP. This happened to my DH (aged late 30's with no risk factors) and it was bladder cancer. He was treated rapidly/tumour removed and has been clear for 4 years. It's not worth ignoring as if it is more sinister, the earlier he is treated the better.

It definitely needs to be checked ASAP. If it's an infection then it needs to be treated to prevent him becoming very unwell. If it is something more serious then obviously the sooner it's picked up the better. Frogmarch him down to the GP with a urine sample.

Thank you. I will insist he contacts GP tomorrow. If that fails then I will happily frogmarch him down there myself. I am worried that it might be something more sinister especially given that he doesn't feel or to be honest look that well.

I'm sorry to hear about your DH Worried but glad he is now doing well.

Just to reassure you I am being investigated for this at the moment went to gp feeling run down they did tested a sample as routine and it showed up, they did repeate tests for 3 months and then referred me to urology the GP did say 99% of the time there is either no reason found or it is something straight forward like an irritated bladder so it is important it is checked out properly but will hopefully be nothing too worrying

He tried to get an appointment on Friday but apparently by the time he got through all the appointments for the day were taken. He was asked if it was urgent to which he replied 'no' and has been told to ring back on Monday. The surgery don't operate a book in advance system. He has now said he doesn't think he'll bother and I'm beside myself. He has a busy work schedule and can't (or more accurately won't) prioritise this. I have told him it is urgent and he must ring on Monday and insist on being seen but he 'can't be arsed' and now refuses to discuss it. I am worried and to be honest quite angry with his attitude but at a loss as to what to do.

I think you just need to reiterate the importance of getting it checked out and reassure that it's probably all ok. At the risk of generalising, this isn't an uncommon male response to health.

I think you're right about this being a fairly common male response but the healthcare system doesn't make it any easier. It was hard enough getting him to ring in the first place but I will again stress to him that he really needs to get checked out.

Hi, hoping your partner got seen. I had protein and blood in urine just been diagnosed with kidney disease about 6 months so please tell him to get checked. X

Hope things are ok and he is getting checked, I have had the camera done and it was all normal. So thankfully it seems to be one of those things that is normal for me as it is a lot of people but it's worth getting checked just for peace of mind

Thanks for recent posts.

Just to update - he has had blood tests, chest x-ray and his urine sent to the lab to check for infection. His bloods showed that he has a very overactive thyroid which probably explains why he has been feeling so rubbish. He is also anaemic and one of his inflammatory markers (esr) is very high. Interestingly though his urine is clear and his kidney function is fine so it is still a bit of a mystery. No results from chest xray as yet.

I'm glad your tests came back normal lozwil. It may just 'one of those things' for my DH but at least it got him to the GP and his overactive thyroid was discovered. He is feeling so much better since starting treatment.
