Receding gum

Is it normal for receding gum to hurt badly enough that you think you need a root canal?

I already went to my dentist twice, he could not find anything wrong and told me that it is sensitive tooth due to receding gum. Do I need a second opinion. I am in the U.S. btw

I saw the dentist today for a gum infection which will need root treatment as infection has got in behind the gum. I imagine receding gums give less protection against infection/debris.

Probably so, I think I may have to get a second opinion.
