Positive stories about Topiramate?

I've got a long history of poorly controlled migraines. I've just been prescribed topiramate. The side affects sound awful but I was wondering if anyone is on it and ok? I'm am intensive care nurse so I can't afford to have dulled mental capacity.

my ds age 12 has been on them 15 months ,
he takes them before bed as they would make him too sleepy in the daytime.
the only side effect he has is the sleepiness on them , so cant go to sleepovers ect as they make him drowsy and if he fight the sleep ,he really feels it the next day.
we were told to keep his fluid levels up,( as he plays a lot of sport ),especially in the hot weather-something about kidney stones risk??

I'm on it and tbh did struggle with the side effects quite a bit at first. I was fine until I got up to my full dose then had problems with concentration, forgetfulness, feeling shivery and a few other things. My doctor advised that I reduce the dose for a month. After that I went back up to full dose and have been fine.
I don't get migraines, I take it for intracranial hypertension and it has helped me enormously so I am glad I went on it and persevered through the side effects.

I've been on it for helping to manage my migraines for about 8 years now. I'm on 100mgs two in the morning two in the evening because those are best times I find for me, it took a while to get the dosage right though. To begin with I did have some concentration side effects, but these do wear off you just need to be patient. I also went off of coffee and all fizzy drinks almost immediately and I had a quite a substantial weight loss too, but this has levelled off now.

But, the best thing for me, being a chronic migraine sufferer was the effect on the migraines themselves. It hasn't ever got rid of them, but I'm now able to live a relatively 'normal' life instead of having a four day attack every week

Did you ever find topirimate helpful / did it affect your cognitive function?
