Found out today that my aunt has breast cancer, all that I know is that she has to go into hospital on monday to have a 'wire' put into her breast and then go back on the 26th to have lump removed.
What is the wire for? what does it do. What else generally happens?

my auntie had breast cancer, had a lumpectomy and has made a full recovery, she has been clear for over 10 years..

i wish your auntie a full and complete recovery too. x

I'm sorry to hear this tiredemma. There's a really good explanation here if you scroll down to "wire guided biopsy".

My Aunt had some cancerous cells spotted in a mamogram about 10 years ago. They were taken out, and I think they used the wire to mark the position, as the cells were too small to see otherwise??!!
She has been fantastic ever since - just had her one hip replaced!
The medics did say that it would have been several years before a lump would have shown itself - which is why mamograms can be fantastic!
Hope all goes well with your Aunt.
