dentist and X-rays

My dentist surgery has changed hands and we've all had to reregister. As part of the reregistering we apparently need to have an X-ray. I understand that this is to pick up any problems that aren't obvious/visible from a regular check.

My problem is that every time they try to X-ray, I gag. I don't know why, I've had X-rays taken before.

The dentist now says that if they can't do it at my next appt they will refer me to the hospital to get it done. My question is, is this really necessary? Is it likely to be a requirement of staying registered with this surgery?

Any info/opinions on this would be great.

They can't insist (and if they try, I'd change practice) - ask them if they are familiar with the FGDP(UK) publication 'Selection Criteria for dental radiography' and in particular section 9.12 which clearly states 'Don't take screening radiographs or as routine'

Thanks that really helpful.

I'd like to change practices but no others around here are taking on nhs patients at the moment. I'll keep looking.

You absolutely won't be the only one who gags. It's incredibly common
Try to breathe through your nose - if it's routine X-rays I can't imagine that the hospital would do it much differently tbh
And no they absolutely can't make you -

I, too, gag really easily. Last year I changed dentist's and after several failed attempts to get x-rays for some root work my - very relaxed dentist - came up with a trick she uses with children.
She made me circle my left foot. My brain focused on this action and on how ridiciolous I must look instead of on my mouth and throat. It took time and concentration but it worked.

Best of luck.
