Hope not

Even if the hormones are affected isn't the coil intended to rpevent implantation, so making it unlikely to be affected? (I may be wrong). I also thought anti-b's messed up oabsorption of the pill which should make mirena OK but probably so very wrong on that too

no not at all....just been on antibiotics and have a mirena.....so i know for sure !

Blandmum · 08/01/2007 20:48

No, because antibiotics only affect the metabolism of the oestrogen in the Combined pill (and only some antibiotics). Mirena only has progestogen in it

tissy · 08/01/2007 20:48

no!
antibiotics SOMETIMES stop the pill from working by causing diarrhoes and preventing absorption of the pill. Mirena works by relasing hormones locally (not affected by ab's) and by preventing implanatation.

Agree have had quite strong ab's and made no odds. Think it is to do with the possibilty ab's can upset your stomach making the pill less easily absorbed

some antibiotics....and there are very few that have this effect, one is used to treat TB and one for long term acne use, but you will need to check.......affect the pill not because the make you sick, but because the speed up the rate that enzymes in the liver get rid of the hormones in the pill.

There will be a warning on the antio biotic leaftlet (the one that comes in the pack) if this is the case.

if yu vomit while taking the pill, for whatever reason, you should follow the inof on the leaflet about taking extra precautions
