Nits, keep treating but still keep coming back

DD got nits about 5 weeks ago. I have treated & combed with 4 different types of shampoo/treatment after 7 days. . Yesterday I got out only 2 nits & quite a few eggs. I am going to try another treatment that says rapid treatment kills eggs & live & may prevent reinfestation but it's the most expensive one.
I can't understand why their not gone.

DD ties her hair up. Not sure what more I can do.

Have you checked everyone else in the family? It might be she's getting reinfected.

Also I think you need to comb every day until they are gone.

comb comb comb. Make sure you have a really good comb (nitty gritty is good-the ones that come with the treatments are generally crap). Comb every day really thoroughly using white conditioner on the hair and wiping on kitchen paper.

My dd had them for around 3 months before they finally went. I stopped using the treatments as they were expensive, tricky and tbh a massive pain in the arse to find time for with 3 kids.

I just went for combing with the nitty gritty comb every single day. That was the only thing that did it. Just wet hair, a detangler spray and the comb.

I do sympathise though, I never thought I'd be rid of them!

Ugh. It is awful but you have to do the entire family, and you need to wet-comb everyone pretty much every other day AS WELL as the treatments. Constant vigilance until you are SURE there's none left is the only way.

Comb, comb, comb and loads of conditioner. It can take ages though. DD2 has the thickest of thick hair, and it can take an hour to nit comb hers properly. Plus every day, or other day at worst. We've never had to resort to chemical treatments, just the Nitty Gritty comb (DDs have a different coloured one each) and good conditioner.

Thanks yes we've all been treated. I'll comb again when she's washed her hair tomorrow. I think that's where I've gone wrong. I've treated & combed then checked a week later & they are back again. I didn't realise to keep on combing afterwards as I thought you just did it after the treatment to get rid of the dead ones & eggs.

I've seen someone on here recommend tipping lysterene mouthwash over the hair and then leaving it in overnight, then combing out, as a way to get rid. May be worth a try along with the combing everyday option.

The treatments don't tend to kill the eggs so you need to comb and retreat to get any new hatchlings. Every other day shoukd be sufficient

Thanks I will definitely keep combing then & will do one more treatment next Weds to hopefully eliminate them. I'll keep combing & inspecting after that for a few more weeks too.

Are you changing pillow cases and pyjamas every day. Maybe pouring some boiling water over brushes?

You don't need to change pillows/pj's every day for headlice. Clean hair out of hair brushes though and don't share them.

You need to buy a nitty gritty comb& cheap conditioner.
Hair into sections & go through every single strand.
I would do this daily or twice daily for a week, then every two days, every 3 days etc.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I have cleaned the brushes in the shampoo & changed pillowcases. I will do the combing through & treat once again & hopefully that should do the trick.

I do the shampoo treatments twice, even though they say once is enough it never is. So I do the full shampoo treatment again about 3 or 4 days later. I found the Hedrin spray was quite good as it dries fast and you can leave it in then wash it out next morning. And its not as greasy as the Lyclear or similar.
As they get older they don't touch heads as much as younger kids so it's not something that you'll have to put up with forever.

comb & hunt every night for at least 3 days after first discovery, & every other night after that until you just can't find anything. Many people do a routine check once a week even if there are no signs.

I don't treat except very long hair, just comb with a regular Boots comb, I don't like NittyGritty because I want satisfaction of seeing what I've found. And didn't bother with other measures. Am lucky DD had pale fine hair so eggs easy to find with a bright light. Keep hair tied back as much as possible, or short or both. They crawl head to head to reinfest.
