New vaccine coming out in the summer

Hi, has anyone heard about a new combined DTP-Hib-IPV vaccine coming out in the summer via the NHS? A paed I saw last month to discuss vaccines said the NHS was finally introducing Inactivated Polio but only as a combined jab with DTP-Hib.

Has anyone had the Inactivated Polio on the NHS (rather than the Oral/Live)? Is it called IMOVAX as mentioned on Pg 4 of this NHS doc ?

Any help appreciated.

My dd had the innactivated polio on the NHS, but she was on steroids at the time, so not able to have any live vaccine. It was a jab, not an oral vaccine - don't remember if it was called Imovax or not.

I think this is the one that doesn't have the mercury in it - acellular or something. DS had the standard one for the first two doses and was MISERABLE afterwards but had the new one for the last one and was absolutely fine.

I think the idea is that the DOH is phasing out the old one so you can request the acellular if you prefer (I would myself) but they won't nec offer it.

You can get DTaP with or without hib minus thimerosil. OPV doesn't contain thimerosil

IPV hasn't been used in the UK much (except in cases like sparks) as they've always said its less effective than OPV. IPV has always been the choice in the states though as they say its safer. Swings and roundabouts as usual.

Yes, ds is about to get DTaP without the Hib and I want to get IPV but the nurse didn't know which one to get in. The Paed did say IMOVAX was for people with suppressed immune systems etc. So perhaps this is the one used in the US/NZ.

It was just interesting that they've decided to combine yet more vaccines together so that babes get just the one jab at 2,3,4mo. I guess as they're getting these as separates at the moment in the same session it might not be such a bad thing (if you want that combination of jabs) but it just seems yet another septuplet (sp?) jab that hasn't any history of side-effects.

Sorry - realised I septuplet was 7! I meant 5 jabs in 1 (whatever that is.. triple, quadruple, sextuple.. but can I remember 5?!?!)

Think the spacing worries me more. DTP used to be given over the first year (and first DTP and OPV were separate) Now 8, 12 and 16 weeks? Maybe its less of a problem if it doesn't contain thimerosil. I think thimerosil shot shot shot really screwed up ds1.

It is difficult to sort out reactions when they get given so much at once though.

i've just tried to get the info up from the nhs doc and my computer is being stubborn. does this mean we will be able to ask for the infanrix in the summer, do they specify a date? i have repeatedly asked my surgery and they say they don't have it - even though they are used as the pre-school booster. i am so confused.

Hi Shrub, you should defintely be able to get Infanrix if that's the one you want. Here is another link to the NHS website and click on Thiomersal and Vaccines: Factsheet on the right hand side. They should have that in the surgery for boosters like you say. There should be no issues in giving it to your dd/ds. It clearly says "routine primary immunisation when DTwP contraindicated". Just make sure the date of the vacc is recent (ie. in the last year or so) HTH.

They're (as in the dept of health) not keen on babies having dtap. (because it may interfere with hib - but may not- anyway just about everywhere else in the world uses it). However my drs surgery said they would happily order it in for me. IN then end i didn't test them as I didn't get ds2 vaccinated, but the nurse said providing I gave them notice it would be no probem.
Davros' surgery gave her dd infanrix, I think she just refused any others so they did it.

Looks like this is the one - already released in Ireland.
