Enlarged thyroid - self-conscious

I happened to glance in the mirror over the weekend as I swallowed my evening meds and saw the left side of my thyroid bobbing up and down. The GP's pretty sure it's some variety of nodules so I'm off for an ultrasound on Friday, and results next week.

I've lost a bit of weight recently so I don't know if this is something new or if it was lurking beneath the fat and I just never saw it.

I've done a lot of reading so I think I'm prepared for whatever might be found in there. Funnily enough, I'm less worried about what it might turn out to be than I am about the fact that it's visible! In the grand scheme of things it's not very big but I'm very self-conscious about it. I think it looks awful, especially as I'd like to be able to enjoy my new slimmer neck. Has anyone with an enlarged thyroid (in the absence of cancer) had theirs removed/reduced so it can no longer be seen?

Do you have hyperthyroidism? Is that what has caused the weight loss?

thelastwingedthing · 15/03/2016 21:27

No, the weight loss is deliberate. I don't seem to have any symptoms at all. Just this rotten lump in my neck.

Urgh, I have to go for a fine needle aspiration. I had an ultrasound - there's just one nodule but it's large, "of heterogeneous echo texture", and highly vascular. I'm trying not to worry - I know these things tend to be really treatable even if malignant - but I could really do without it Sad

Hope it turns out to be nothing to be worried about and you can get seen sooner rather than later.

I've got a thyroid cyst too but have appt with specialist next week with a view to remove.

How did you get on? I've also got to have a needle biopsy now.

thelastwingedthing · 15/04/2016 07:58

Did you get yours done, Hey? I'm seeing an endo next week and hopefully a biopsy soon afterwards.
