Has anyone had a laminectomy operation

Hello,
I have been told by my consultant I need Back surgery after my MRI shown I had on both sides of 3 nerves on my back being pinched, I also have the start of arthritis and wear and tear on my back.
How long does it take to recover from the operation? Does anyone have advice?.
I am very nervous as I am 27 with 7 children oldest is 11 and youngest is 1. DH and I run our own business so he can take time of to help, Also my mum will take time of work to help.

I had a discectomy and laminectomy and was back to work (but only part-time) at exactly 3 months. If you are younger and fitter you might do better or if its keyhole instead of major surgery. You will need help with everything for the first few days and with housework, etc for the first few weeks at least. Good luck!

I was just about doing the school run after four weeks, albeit slowly. You'll be encouraged to start pottering around the day after the op and build up with short walks. Try to get a physio appointment set up for around this time so you can get advice and support when you are starting to get back into things. I wouldn't advise planning to get back at a certain point but ease in over time. I started studying during my recovery so if work can be done at home and in comfortable positions you may be able to do more earlier. I had a bilateral laminectomy so one of the "spikes" has gone. Apparently the spine is no less stable with it gone. It's barely noticeable that it's missing and the wound wasn't an issue at all, I think it's a good place for healing neatly. I still have pain and suspect the nerves have been damaged from the long term compression, but it's much better in the legs and when sitting - it was lumbar. I hope you get the relief, I've been suffering from the age of 28/9 and it's rotten for the patient and their family.
