Prostap advice

I need some advice please.
I have been told that I need a hysterectomy for large fibroids, pain and flooding. I had an ablation 10 years ago so can't have another and 4 c sections mean my uterus is not the right shape for a marina coil.
I am happy to have the hysterectomy, I see it as the end of my pain and problems.
My consultant said I need to lose a stone before she will operate so has said that I need to lose a stone and she will see me again in 6months. She has prescribed prostap for the 6 months between now and then

I am worried about the prostap, has anyone else used it?

Anyone?

Not on Prostap but I'm on Synarel which is a similar drug (I take it for endometriosis).

These drugs create a menopausal state so you may get hot flushes and other symptoms of menopause. I had a couple of months with these side effects and then everything calmed down. I'm on it long term and it has been great for me. I had surgery with an excellent specialist but was still in pain and the Synarel got rid of most of it, and of course my periods stopped which was good for me.

What is it you're worried about with the drug?

I have regular bone density scans (every couple of years) to check for signs of osteoporosis but I'm fine so far... That shouldn't be an issue for you though if it's only short term.

Will they leave your ovaries when they do the hysterectomy? If they take them you will go into menopause anyway so with the Prostap it will just happen earlier.

I am not sure why I am worried really. I think it's the thought of straight into the menopause and not having hrt if I suffer with any menopausal symptoms. Also because prostap is only licenced for 6 months, makes me worry that it is not safe! ( realise that I may be hormonal and irrational!)

I think the 6-month licensing is because of the osteoporosis risk. The drug I'm on is also only supposed to be used for six months but doctors consider situations individually and it can be used for longer. In my case I was in my early 40s when I started so already close-ish to menopausal age.

You can be prescribed a small amount of HRT alongside the Prostap - the idea is to give you enough to lessen the menopausal symptoms while still keeping the fibroid symptoms suppressed.

I guess it depends how fed up you are with the pain and bleeding - you might find the menopausal symptoms less troubling! I think sometimes the known symptoms, however bad, seem preferable to the unknown. I do understand your concerns - I debated for a long time before starting the Synarel and nearly didn't stick with it!

I think that I will go to my gp for a chat, I am erring on the side of better the devil you know at this point though.
