Wisdom tooth pain - no infection

I've been having pain around an impacted wisdom tooth (only just slight tip is through the gum) for about a week, so with my experience of my other impacted wisdoms below I thought it was probably infected. Went to dentist who looked for a minute and said there was nothing and I should just take ibropufen.
I've not had any xrays for years on these teeth but the last one I did have showed at least one lying horizontal. I can't remember which it was.
I'm just wondering why I'm getting this pain if there is apparently no infection?
The pain is sort of in the gum on the outside of that tooth and the next molar.
