What happens if you use canesten without thrush?

I bought canesten assuming I'm suffering from thrush. I have slightly unusual white discharge and a strongish smell but no itching or irritation etc. There was no pharmacist available to talk to as I didn't have time to wait and there's no GP appointments until well into March so I bought the canesten pessary and cream.
If it turns out not to be thrush will there be any negative reaction? Should I buy a testing kit?

I don't think anything negative would happen but you could go to the Dr for a test just to check it is thrush. If it is they could prescribe you a tablet to take to clear it

A practice nurse could do it rather than GP if that's quicker

I did this repeatedly many many years ago, thinking I had thrush when I actually had BV. The doctor said that canestan makes the ph balance more alkali to counteract the acidity of thrush (or possibly vice versa!) and hence i was making my condition worse as that was caused by my ph being the opposite to how it is with thrush

I don't know if this is making sense, hopefully it is! However, if you don't have anything wrong in first place, I wouldn't have thought a one of altering of the ph balance will have much effect

Sounds like BV rather than thrush. Antibiotics are usually the best cure.

I've used the pessary, hoping nothing awful happens. I have tried to get an appointment with anyone who'll see me but there was at least a 3 week wait.
Horrible question now- how long does the pessary stay there? I'm seeing my veru new partner on Sunday and have terrible visions of a foaming fanjo

Try your local sexual health clinic if you have one near you. They should be able to see you faster than the GP and can swab for BV as well as thrush

Our sexual health clinic will no longer see people for thrush and STD checks as they are too busy. We GPs however have lots of spare time to see you......not!
OP, canesten won't do you any harm but you could see a nurse if you can get an appointment with them.

Canestan now make a self-diagnosis kit which tests for thrush and BV.
I've not seen it on sale but did read about it somewhere recently- try their website.

Nothing bad happened except some slightly alarming chalk in my knickers. Vagina is foam free and back in action.

Polly I saw a pharmacist who recommend I buy one and a box of bv gel for potential future emergencies. Technology is amazing.
