Slipped disc in back - anyone any experience?

OK I have been suffering from what the Phsyiotherapists says is a slipped disc in my back on and off for six months.

I am in bed for about 1 day a week unable to move and with a lot of numbness in one leg.

The Physios say that I should stop all exercise (which I have) and do Pilates for an hour a day (which I have not) and stop lifting my children (which I have not because I have two pre-schoolers). Other than that there is nothing they can do.

The Consultant says I should CONTINUE to exercise and ignore the Physios obsession with Pilates, because they are all Pilates teachers in their spare time. Other than that there is nothing they can do.

Everyone tells me what a great osteopath / chiropracter / accupuncturist / witch doctor they have who has cured them of all ills. Sadly I don't have money I can throw away trying to discover which particular one might work for me. And I'm also v. sceptical of anything that isn't backed up by science.

So basically THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO. The GP advised me to take my children out of nursery (2 days a week) and put them into care with a Childminder for 5 days a week (which would cost the same).

I feel like I have hit a dead-end and I don't know what to do. I really WANT to stay at home with my children but at the moment I can't look after them all the time.

Has anyone any advice?

My mum suffered from this, she had an op after many years of suffering, it was 50/50 wheelchair or recovery. Thankfully she got the recovery bit, I think there was more to it than 1 slipped disk though(however thats how its started)
Do try, when possible to stop picking up your children, sit down and get them to come to you, encourage them to do things for themselves etc.
Get yourself one of these
Has noone offered a corset or back brace, My mum had one?
I remember the pain my mum was in..have much sympathy for you.
