FAI hip impingement

Anyone had a diagnosis for this? I've had awful hip pain for a year and finally x-rayed and assessed by MSK doctor and positively diagnosis with both hips FAI.

My question is really does or will physio do anything long term as this is the first route under NHS pathway. Three months of physio and if no improvement I will be referred back to the GP who will then refer me to surgeon.

From what I've read it seems the outcome is nearly always surgery and I can't find any physio success stories. So really at the moment I'm thinking what's the point? I can't get physio for another eight weeks then three months treatment so another six months stalling it seems.

Any one had experience of either treatments?

someone in my family has had this and has decided to try to work their way through it with exercise.

There is a book called the Supple Leopard (see Amazon) which is an excellent book and far better than any physio ( person in my family was really dejected by physio approach.)

The book gives lots of exercises to try to correct the problem but it's hard work- my relative did exercises for 30 mins or more daily to try to sort it.

It's caused by an imbalance of muscle /wear and tear and surgery may not be a long term answer -the problem may just be deflected to another area of the skeleton.

This link is about exercises and the book Supple Leopard is listed right at the end.

Thanks polly I'll take a look. My fermur shows definite bumps so it is mechanical rather than muscular. I'll continue to look for information.
