i am starting to get panicky about ds now. He is 2.5 and was sent home from nursery last thursday a bit unwell and with a temperature. By friday he was worse, saturday a bit worse still and on xmas eve he couldn't get his head off the pillow. The out of hours doctor predictably said it is a virus. It's now a week later and he is still sleeping 17 hours a day and just sitting on the sofa the rest of the time. His temp is fluctuating a bit but i only had to give him calpol once yesterday so its not too bad. He is eating a little and drinking fine. He doesn't have any other obvious symptoms other than a complete lack of eneregy. We are goimg back to our doctor today and i spoke to the nurse on the phone this morning. She told me this sounded unsual and so now i am panicking. One of his second cousins develpoped type 1 diabetes at this age last year and having now googled it i find that the early symptoms can be mistaken for flu. Could this be it? what the hell is up with him? what else means you have no energy at all for a week but no other obvious symptoms?

lack of energy after a virus isn't unusual, IMO. It's the bodies way of stopping the patient over exurting them selves whilest they get better. A virus can knock the body of an adult for 6.

Dh had flu several years ago now & he wasn't right for a good month. Try not to worry until you have seen a doctor.

excuse typos...fighting sleep!

ear infection? Maybe hes staying still because it hurts to move.

vitomum · 28/12/2006 12:52

thanks sandcastles and charliecat. he did actually have a bit of redness in his ear and so has been on antibiotics since sunday. My feeling is that it was not that however as he didn;t say his ear was sore.

i know there are lots of virus around at the moment but everyone else seems to have D&V with it which he doesn't. It's all so weird. I have never seen him like this. I just want to get to the doctors now

In all honesty, if the nurse thought it was cause for concern she would have made you get there ASAP.

He is only 2, so any virus will knock him out.

Thanks for asking lulabelle. The doctor reckons it is a chest infection and has prescribed different antibiotics to the ones he has been on since xmas eve. She wasn't going to take his blood sugar levels but i cried and she did it! they were fine. If there is no improvement in 2 days i am going to take him back.

Go with your instinct, if you are not happy, keep going back and back and back. GPs miss things and mothers/fathers/full time carers know their children. Hope he's better soon.
