My throat is killing me, and has been for the past 4 days. It doesn't seem to be getting any better. I have been chewing throats sweets and takinh cold and flu stuff but it's still sooooo sore.

I used to suffer alot with sore throats when i was younger, but haven't had one like this in years.

Did it come on suddenly, without other cold/flu symptoms but with a fever? If so, it might be a septic/strep throat and you'll need antibiotics Here's a website with useful info. sore throat Hope you feel better soon, NC.

Nutcracker - gargle with dissolving aspirin, it usually works straight away and then just take them every 4 hours HTH

Did i mention i'm a wimp and that gargling with anything would make me sick

Suedonim - It did sort of come out of the blue, and i don't really have a cold as such. My whole neck aches, and my throat even hurts when i yawn.

Thats what i get for shouting at the kids

That does sound as if you need to get it checked out, Nutcracker. I had a strep throat recently and the gp said a bad throat that comes on suddenly, with fever but without cold symptoms is very likely to be bacterial. I suspect a course of a/b's wouldn't come amiss for you. Take care.

Hmmm, if you hate gargling (or however you spell it), then I guess salt and warm water is out then? Helps clean out germs....

You could also drink hot water with lemon and honey (and add some ginger, if you like).

I take nurofen for sore throats. It really helps as it is an anti-inflamatory as well as pain killer.

aspirin will help even if you don't gargle - but it's conta-indicated if you suffer from asthma or stomach problems. read the label!
hope you feel better soon.

nutcracker - lemon is an excellent natural antibacterial. Cup of freshly boiled water with slice of lemon (or as much freshly squeezed lemon juice as you can take) in as often as you like usually does the trick for sore throats with me and if you do need a/b's it will help fight the bacteria and stop it getting worse until you get started on them.

good point, midden -and honey added to the lemon juice is even better - especially if it's manuka honey from nz - s'pposed to have anti-bacterial properties. works for me!
