Cold sores and hormones

I've always suffered badly with cold sores. Not the little ones at the corner of the mouth, but huge nasty ones. I've had them around my nose and mouth, on my nose, around my eyes, on my cheeks, and they're huge (think an inch across) and painful. Taking daily Acyclovir does nothing, and I've not found a thing that works. However, I only get them around my period. During my two pregnancies I didn't get any, and I don't have them while breastfeeding (no period). I didn't get them when I was younger while I was on a certain brand of contraceptive pill (can't remember which one it was). Has anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering whether there's a form of contraception I can take when I stop breastfeeding that will replicate this? Any ideas?
