Fever since Friday night - should I call doctor?

DS is 2y 1m and has had a temp of 40 since Friday night. We have been giving him the odd bit of calpol in his milk but today we have started giving him it every 4 hours as he seems to be getting worse.

He just seems to have a cold but he's not eating and is quite listless but not so that I would think he was really poorly. My instinct is that he's ok but I'm not sure what to do.

I remember something from somewhere that said if the calpol reduces the temp it's ok. But if after 3 does of calpol ie 12 hours, it still hasn't had an effect, then call the doctor. The calpol does manage to bring it down about 2 degrees for a couple of hours but then it shoots up again.

Do you think I should just call one out to be safe?

yep - call a doctor - better to be safe than sorry as they say. He has been feverish for 5 days and nothing is shifting it - may have an infection somewhere and need antibiotics. There are loads of bugs going round at the mo'.

In the meantime you can alternate nurofen and calpol - say give calpol and 2 hours later give nurofen ...

Hope he gets better.

Good call, thanks. I have taken him to the out of hours clinic tonight and he has an infection albeit they don't know where. So he's got some antibiotics, which will be better for him than another couple of days of constant calpol then antibiotics.

Where have the days gone when a doctor would come to you instead of having to take a poorly boy out in the cold and rain? DS was soooo cross. Still at least we can all sleep tonight.

hope he recovers well - yes it is terrible that GPs won't come out ... i had to do the same with my projectile vomiting DS 2 weeks ago - had a 35 min drive to the walk in centre .... grrr.
