Anyone tried Depo Provera AND Mirena?

Just wondered if the side effects were different as the Mirena dosage is smaller iirc.
On Depo Provera I found myself feeling fairly low and off sex (but that may have been due to vaginal dryness, another side effect) which is what is making me hesitate about the Mirena coil.

Interested to see responses to this. I am on depo and thinking of going down this route too.

I also wondered if you still have periods when on the mirena, this is one of the few things I like about the Depo, I don't have to face them each month.

It's still progesten based. IME, if progesten gives you a bad reaction, steer clear of it!

It intensified my PND like no one's business.

Was on Depo for 5 years and didn't have a period the whole time. Came off teh have DD & DS. Asked to GP if I could go on Depo again but she advised not to as 5 years is uaually long enough.

Having Mirena fitted this afternoon.

Just posted more or less this on another thread. The Depo made me go a bit mental. (More mental than normal.) DIdn't agree with me, but I had the Mirena for over two years and can't recommend it highly enough. It's a tiny amount of progesterone so I suppose it didn't affect me like the Depo did.

Periods only "returned to normal" after the Depo as I went back on the combined pill.

However, wehn I had the Mirena fitted, the periods more or less ceased after a couple of months and I had no nasty side effects whatsoever. I was pregnant within 6 weeks of having it removed.

depo didn't affect my mind - I just never stopped bleeding on it. Tried the mirena next and that basically screwed with everything.

Dophus · 12/12/2006 11:25

I hated in depo - a year for my epriods to return. I don't like the thoguh of having a drug in me that long.

Mirena I felt fine and conceived a few weeks after having it removed.

No periods on either.

I had depo injections and they gave me very painful breast cysts! I also developed endometriosis around the same time which may or may not have been related.

I have had a Mirena coil since having dd2 (had it removed pre-ds conception, pg again so not got it just now, obviously). I don't have periods with it, virtually no PMT symptoms (just get a little clumsy when I should be "on"). Love it and will have it again after this baby is born.

twelvedaysofchristmas · 12/12/2006 11:27

I suppose one of the main positive things about Mirena is that if after 6 months, you haven't adjusted to it; you can have it removed and get back to normal.

I think most people have issues with how long the Depo stays in the system. There have been threads, I think, on "how to get Depo out of my system". I think I posted a link for someone a while back with advice I found on how to clear your system.

Had the mirena coil 3 times, only one of them I had no problems the other 2 displaced my last one being the worst embedding in my uterus and causing me issues. I am on the depo shot now, it’s stopped my periods, it’s amazing. Did anyone have issues with spotting occasionally, I also spot after sex is that normal on the depot shot?
