Baby coughing and not gaining weight

Ds is 6 months old and has been coughing on and off since birth - a sharp barking cough. He eats well and is a very happy baby but is not gaining weight as he should (he is now below the 9th percentile). Docs say his chest is clear and health visitor is advising to start giving him more iron rich foods such as lentils and chicken. Anyone else experienced poor weight gain and cough like this (may not be connected). I am very worried about him

Grommit · 17/05/2004 13:58

most of ours are women, and i find them a bit abrupt, but the man i saw last time kept saying do come back if you have any worries about dd. he really took his time and reassured me

Has he become more mobile recently ? Is he breast fed or bottle fed ? I don't think a drop from one centile to the next is necessarily significant at this age. If he is otherwise happy, well and active then try not to worry overly. Don't think iron rich foods would boost weight gain though - or is the HV's suggestion separate ? Sorry no idea on the cough or whether the two are related.

Grommit - no advice really but I'm thinking of you and ds

Kayleigh · 19/05/2004 16:17

Grommit, your dd is very slight too. What was her weight when she was the same age ?
I think if he is eating and happy (and he is a happy contented baby - you are very lucky) I don't think there is anything to worry about.

Kayleigh - she was heavier - always on the 50th percentile, although now she would prob be much lower as she is very slight - makes you wonder how much we should pay attention to these charts. She only weights just over 2.5 stone and she is 4.5 but she is so active and healthy! Seeing paediatrician on Sat
